The Rick Russell Band is a ‘newly’ formed Classic/Southern Rock band, but its members are no strangers to playing and performing. Made up of 6 musicians from the Cheshire County area, the band is named for it’s lead guitarist, Rick Russell, who has played professionally for the past 30 years. Rick has performed with the band “Sky Rider.” He has played with various other bands in Texas and California. He has also performed throughout New England with the ‘Gary Skillings’ bluegrass trio. His passion is for ‘rock music’ and his guitar style is inspired by some of the guitar greats – Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton. He also shares the lead vocals.
The band members include Norman Vaine/Drummer, also a seasoned professional. Norman has played in Connecticut with the ‘Timberland Band’ and ‘The Other Band’. He also played for a time in California with the ‘KCBQ Flatbed Band.’ Locally, Norman played with the ‘Ernie Lake Band’ and ‘Firehouse Harris.’ Norman also does terrific backup vocals.
John Roberts/Bass Guitarist, is originally from the Boston area. He is currently a Professor of Art and former chair of the Art Department at Keene State College. His prints have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. He played bass guitar with a band briefly in his high school years and then resumed within the last 10 years.
Linda Rule/Keyboard, and John Rule/Rhythm Guitarist, are husband and wife who have been playing music together seriously for the past 10 years. Their love for music and their introduction to Rick Russell is what initially got the group rolling.
And lastly, Steve Bailey/Lead Vocalist and Acoustic Guitarist, whose passion was mostly for country music, was convinced to ‘give rock music a try’ and the band was glad that he did. His voice is ‘just perfect’ for the songs they play. It is strong, pure, and he sings with heart-felt emotion. He is also a a talented songwriter, penning “Big Oceans” while he was in Iraq in 2006 & 2007.
The Rick Russell Band plays many classic rock hits, with a southern feel. They cover a wide range of songs from Paul McCartney and Lynyard Skynard to the Black Crows and Pearl Jam. Several members of the band are also accomplished songwriters and they perform many of their own original tunes.
