Emigrant with a message

The Rolf Eikeland Band: "Island of truth"

Score: 4 out of 6

There are people in the music industry that think the internet or downloading is the root of all evil, but the internet does also have a positive side. In Canada sits an emigrated Siddis who reads the CD reviews in Aftenbladet. His own music is not distributed in Norway, but can be downloaded from all the larger online stores or ordered through the band's website Fruitful Records.

The 45 year old has settled in the music metropolis of Toronto and is focusing on Christian rock. That is, the kind of Christian rock that if you don't listen to the lyrics, you could have heard from root rock bands influenced by Tom Petty and David Gilmour. If you want to compare Eikeland with someone in his own niche, then Larry Norman is the name. He also lists the following influences: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Bjørn Eidsvåg, Andrae Crouch and Nurk Twins. Pretty varied in other other words.

This is his third release following "Narrow Road" (1993) and Love Is (1997). Eikeland has a message he wishes to communicate, but is not depending on that to make the music work. With a powerful voice he handles bar blues, ballads and rock. He knows how to handle a guitar and the band is weathered and experienced from other places than just the Christian rock scene.

Best tracks: "Back to the altar", "Island of truth", "Loss and hope" and "Waiting for the storm".

Bio

Rolf Eikeland is a seasoned singer/songwriter and recording artist from just outside Toronto, ON, Canada.
He grew up in Stavanger, Norway, but moved to Toronto with his wife and two daughters in 1988.
Some of the band members have played different functions together since 1993, including clubs and churches, but the current configuration is from 2008. Focus is now on the original music from their new CD, ”Island Of Truth”.
Musical style varies from rock and blues to ballads, all with a 70s classic rock feel. Obvious influences are The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, The Rolling Stones and Larry Norman. The lyrics are often edgy with many songs reflecting Rolf’s faith. Emphasis on strong melodies. The band plays mostly secular venues where Christian music is usually not heard.
