Bio

The Rosy Starlings are a singing/song writing duo from Bethel, CT dabbling in alternative country, pop, and rock n’ roll. The small group delights in playing their short, but unique set of original songs and covers. Mary Helen and Scott started the group, inspired by their mutual love of music. Mary Helen sings, and fumbles blindly with percussion and songwriting. Scott shares the task of songwriting, while also tackling the guitar, bass, and whatever other instruments strike his fancy. They are often joined by Steve, who contributes on lead guitar and accompanying vocals.

Mary Helen and Scott became friends when they were 15 years old, fell in love at 19, and got married nine years later. After almost a year of holy matrimony, the pair decided to finally start making music together, and The Rosy Starlings were born. Scott has been playing guitar since he was a child, and Mary Helen grew up beside a piano, learning how to sing along with her father and three sisters. Both Mary Helen and Scott love music, probably more than anything else, and have spent their lives feverishly collecting, listening, and discecting all that they could get their hands on. Some of their favorites include Tom Waits, Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith, The Beatles, Patsy Cline, The Shins, Nina Simone, Neutral Milk Hotel, Tori Amos, Bjork, Radiohead, Feist, Johnny Cash, Cake, and Wilco… (to name a few)

Though they have just begun, The Rosy Starlings have a number of original songs in their coffer, several of which could be classified as cheerful, optimistic love songs. Others touch on more somber subjects such as lost friendships, death, and the sad state of the world in general. Whatever attitude the songs portray, they are often accompanied by the twang of country guitar, or soft and dreamy finger picking. Recordings are on the way, but until then, please stop by and see The Rosy Starlings perform live, somewhere in the CT/NY area.
