"An instant music party"

The Roundups' unique sound and style gets fans dancing easily

By Jessica Halverson
April 7, 2005

The Roundups make it seem hip to be country with Old Opry style duds with trim and glitter and a lineup that includes upright bass and pedal steel guitar. The 10-year-old band has maintained a home-fried career in Indy through the only remaining original member, Jeff Stevenson.

The now '50s country style band formed from the remnants of a mid-'90s swing and rockabilly band with the goal of finding a female lead singer to take the stage, Patsy Cline-style. The band's fluid history began when that singer, Heather Rose, left and the band remained.

The method has continued, and Stevenson, 43, said he brings in new members when "life gets in the way" for the others.

The Roundups have a slew of non-club shows lined up for this year, including dates at the Indy Steel Club's annual concert, the Eiteljorg Museum and other festivals and all-ages events.

The band's past shows have included anything from opening for Hank Williams Jr. and Tim McGraw to playing at a Formula One racing festival.

The performance part of The Roundups' shows, the costumes and props, is important to Stevenson. He prides the band in being "artsy in a hillbilly way," and feels the entire performance counts, not just what is coming out of the speakers.

Stevenson said the band is playing more original music than ever before, creating new tunes in a very genre-based environment. Moving to the lead position, singing and playing guitar, Stevenson said the shift has been fun for him and he loves being able to play his own tunes. While the band plays mostly originals, writing songs in a nostalgic country-western style has many fans asking if the song the band just played is a tune by Hank Williams.

Throw in the costumes and stage props and it's the whole package -- one that fans can enjoy.

As Stevenson said, "We're like an instant party."

Bio

The Roundups are not just one of Indiana’s premier country bands, they are one of the longest running bands as well. Having recently celebrated their 10th Anniversary, the Roundups are continuing with the country music formula that has made them so successful……playing pure country music in the vintage tradition.

Fronted by lead singer, lead guitarist and chief songwriter Jeff Stevenson, The Roundups are equally adept at playing both full cover sets as well as sets featuring all original music. As a result, the band has been successful playing all types of venues from lodges to honky-tonks to arenas, including opening for such acts as Hank Williams, Jr., Vince Gill, Tim McGraw, BR5-49, The Derailers and countless others.
