"CD REVIEWS"

The Royale Brothers (7-song CD, myspace.com/theroyalebrothers) The lyrics on this fun, guitar-driven goth-country band's debut read like Murder Ballads outtakes: "Stuck my pistol underneath his jaw.../Spilled that bastard's blood upon my floor." In fact, the only time vocalist Joey Royale doesn't sound like a murderous Nick Cave is when he's busy sounding like a murderous Johnny Cash. But beyond the sleeve-worn influences, there's a constant rhythmic innovation and ferociousness in the band's dueling, blues-heavy guitar lines. "CD REVIEWS- LIVE SHOWS"

It's pretty hard to describe a Royale Brothers show — but some absinthe-fueled fever-dream, in which Bo Diddley, the New York Dolls and the Misfits all cavort and caper through a Dia de los Muertos street festival, comes pretty close. The thing about bands this raw and great in performance is that they can rarely capture that sound and energy on a recording. Which is one reason this debut, seven-song disc by New London's Royale Brothers is extra great: not only do the tunes steamroll exuberantly, managing to incorporate all of the live attitude of their concerts, but the songs themselves just flat-out nestle in your brain. "SAILFEST 2007-10,000 +"

The Royale Brothers are the New London band of the moment. It’s been suspected for a while that the death-country quintet were on to something. The band’s set at Sailfest confirmed matters. And, improbably, it was Sailfest, among the fried dough and inflatable Spongebobs, that did it. The Royales could have phoned it in and wrote it off as ruse in front of the crowd looking to drink some beers and then drink more beers. But they didn’t. And it was brilliant.
