"Royal Family -By Loran Crabtree -December, 2007"

I've known the guys from the Royal Family for a while and I've seen them change taste in music and also evolve with their music. I've seen them with Mohawks and leather jackets playing punk and I've seen them with long hair and pea coats playing straight up rock n roll. Through the years and through the changes in music, one thing has stayed the same; they still have the attitude and the passion for the music that they love and play. If one thing stands true for punk rock, it is that you make the best out of a shitty situation. I was invited out to see the Royal Family play and what I saw was just that.

As I pulled up to the venue I saw their lead singer and guitar player, Josh Derosa, standing outside with a close friend of the bands, Tommy Killmore from the Pathetic Love Junkies and ex Corporate Slave. Josh's green Mohawk is long gone and replaced with long brown hair and a beard that Bert Reynolds would be jealous of. After seeing all the guys and sharing handshakes with each other, the first band was scheduled to go on. They were a 4 piece local band that played an alternative radio friendly type of modern rock. Their set consisted of 5 originals and 2 covers. One cover was a Rage Against the Machine cover. More like "Rage From the Machine" ever since they sold themselves to Clear Channel for a large sum of money. The opening band was mediocre at best and had a crowd of around 15 kids, but you have to respect the fact that they gave it all they had in the name of rock n roll.

Next up was the Royal Family. Keep in mind it had been around 2 years since I had seen them play, so I didn't really know what to expect. They took to the stage and opened with their version of a modern day rock n roll anthem. Josh kept the rhythm on his guitar and sang in his Jell-O Biafra meets Kings of Leon voice while their lead guitarist, Kelly Hall, soloed and shredded like Jimmy page from Led Zeppelin. Ross, their bass player, kept it rocking on the low end despite having his strap brake on the first song. There are really only two words to describe their drummer, Lucas, Fucking amazing. He plays with his loud, fast, Ramones style drumming and didn't miss a beat the entire set.

It was halfway through their set and they were playing amazing. I was genuinely glad to be hearing their Led Zeppelin/Ramones style of rock n roll. I started to look around in the crowd and there were only a handful of people standing there. Then the venues sound guy ran up to the stage and said one more song, reason being that the whole night had been crunched on time. Josh and the band were obviously frustrated with the turnout and having the sound guy tell them one more song. "Fuck you, this is a fuck you song." Josh said as they started into their last song of the night. They finished up their set and packed up their equipment and even though they were bummed out with the turnout they all had a blast playing and everyone could tell. After the show we all meet up outside the venue and took a few pictures and I interviewed the guys. We talked about rock n roll, their favorite records and noodle wrestling with Lucas's cousin.

To sum it all up the Royal Family is a modern day rock band playing true rock and roll music which you can hear directly in their music and also through their attitudes. If you haven't heard them before I recommend not only listening to their CD, but also seeing them live. Rock 'n roll ain't dead and the Royal Family is here to prove it. - Dead American Punk

Introducing the Royal Family… These four guys from Georgia are laying down a unique high energy rock, complemented by the vocal styling of lead singer Joshua DeRosa. Inspired by 1970's New York art punk like Velvet Underground, Patti Smith and Television their sound encompasses modern textures and melodies such as Kings of Leon, The Strokes and Pleasure Club. Royal Family keeps audiences captivated and wanting more. Releasing their Debut Album "Vintage Romance" (May 2007) helped put the band on the map. They have since Released their 2008 EP "I Sing the Body Electric". Being known for their intense live performance, the band wanted to capture the same raw energy and passion and put it on the EP. They decided not to record the new tracks the Modern way of overdubs and punching in, but to record it live in the same room, one take per song. You can hear the Anxiety building up in the songs through out the EP. You can be sure these gentlemen will keep building a buzz and stirring up the music scene across the country.
