"The Sailor Sequence"

Monday August 3rd, 2009 • 9:13 am

On their self-titled long player, The Sailor Sequence present themselves not as one that falls through the cracks, but rather the kind of band that becomes a sort of well-kept secret between friends. Stylistically recalling The Appleseed Cast, or perhaps even a stripped down Aqualung, the songs to be found here are probably doomed to become mixtape fodder for the ladies. While it is essentially coffeehouse-lite with an electronic edge, this is far from a bad thing. In fact, the songs are quite soothing.

From TSS opener “Find Yourself” to closer “Harbor,” the listener will find warm acoustic chords juxtaposed with subtle, crisp drum machine beats. In a manner not unlike Baltimore outfit Beach House, The Sailor Sequence have found their niche, showcasing the inclusion of electronic elements in a way that flows naturally, rather than imposing upon the music itself. Other instruments include the occasional presence of keyboards and layered vocals. Studio tricks are present, but not overbearing.

Lyrically, the tracks reach poetic heights that are weighed down a bit by the dominating saccharine-sweet delivery. Though this may prove to alienate a more stoic audience, the rest of us can enjoy these ten offerings. Vague spiritual imagery is present throughout, especially on “Angels,” which makes brief mention of the track’s title. An overwhelming theme is the need for relational reconciliation, as so many albums focused on relationships are.

Expect to hear one or more of these songs on a movie soundtrack someday. What The Sailor Sequence have managed to do here is something truly unique; recalling many artists but no one musician in particular. It appears as though they would be a terrifically mesmerizing live act, though on album, that simply sound calm and relaxed. While nothing on the album truly stands out, any listener whose expectations aren’t too terribly high will be delighted with delightful music for delightful afternoons. - www.stereosubversion.com

Bio

The Sailor Sequence formed in the summer of 2006 out of a studio project collaboration between Kansas natives Nathan Johnson and David Noffsinger (AKA Noffy). The initial studio project featured the blending of Noffy's acoustic/folk stylings with Nathan's ambient electric guitar influence and textured digital programming. What began as an interest to record Noffsinger's voice for fun eventually turned into a persuable live project. Caleb Berciunas joined the group in the fall of 2007 adding his own flare of melodic and percussive talent to the group. TSS currently performs as a three piece, blending instrumental breakdowns, ambient textured programming and catchy but thought provoking lyrics. The groups major musical influences include Explosions in the Sky, Lymbyc Systym, The Album Leaf and Death Cab for Cutie. TSS has shared the stage with such acts as The Appleseed Cast, Mae, Deas Vail, Coalesce, The Forecast, The A.K.A.'s, Edison Glass, The Republic Tigers, Ivory and The Colour Revolt.
