The Screens' self-titled 3-song EP starts with a riff ripped straight out of Jimmy Page's dog-eared playbook, the song, "Honey," quickly careening into a fractured rocker that cries out for Robert Plant vocals. Falling somewhere between 70s-styled cock-rock and 80s-era indie rock (think Replacements) with power-blues overtones, the song kicks serious ass. The aural assault doesn't end there, kiddies! "Fluorescent" essentially mixes British Invasion roots with punk ferocity and attitude, a couple of Matt Westby's hotshot guitar solos fueling the madness and driving the song to greater heights. "$2 Haze" reminds me of Sweet, or maybe the Electric Prunes, bassist Shane Kramer and drummer Erik Siljander providing a bedrock groove for Westby's six-string pyrotechnics and faux-Brit vocals. Altogether, these three tunes serve to wet the listener's appetite for more from the Minneapolis trio. Mixing vintage garage rock with punkish roots and elements of psychedelica into a heady brew of their own creation, the Screens are perhaps the best unsigned band in America right now. This is the kind of no-frills rock & roll that Bomp! Records founder Greg Shaw practically invented (or at least nurtured), the Screens delivering a potent musical elixir to chase away those corporate-rock blues.

THE SCREENS - THE SCREENS (Honey Fluorescent Records)
L’ omonimo E.P. in questione, a dire la verità, non ha nulla di particolarmente originale e può far pensare che i tre giovanotti provenienti da Minneapolis, che si celano dietro il nome di The Screens, stiano semplicemente tentando di cogliere al volo il revival rock’ n’ roll che sta letteralmente sommergendo il pianeta però i brani proposti funzionano, eccome.
Già perché denotano un’ attitudine che perfino ai tanto blasonati Libertines, a parer mio, manca.
Per quanto infatti la band libertina ben più famosa dei nostri riesca mostrare il rock’ n’ roll in tutto il suo virile approccio bohemien, a tratti risulta carente nei contenuti.
Seppur composto da sole tre tracce, il lavoro preso in considerazione riesce a descrivere e ribadire se fosse ancora necessario, come con tre accordi, batteria quadrata e basso incalzante, si possa assemblare un buon prodotto, godibile e perfino amabile, come nel caso della seconda e terza traccia, dove si posso osservare le caratteristiche più positive del gruppo: spigliatezza, grinta e allo stesso tempo pulizia cromatica nella voce di Matt, che a tratti richiama quella di Robert Turner dei Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, con la peculiarità di essere meno stridente e più accattivante.
E poi, senza tanti giri di parole, i pezzi fanno ballare.
Anzi, come si può leggere nella biografia a me pervenuta: “… The sound will shake your ass…”.
