Discography

"Bohemian Grove" LP 2010
"Well-crafted garage pop with a metropolis of accouterments. Kinda like the BritPop of the early 90s, except newer. And, just maybe, better. ‘Cause this is rock and roll, baby, and you’ve gotta respect that.”

The Ukulele EP Ep 2010

Song "Cold Moss" on Tsurumi Records chain letter 2009

"The Grave From Out of Which We Briefly Wander" LP 2009
“…Many a jangly indie band can learn how to properly channel the VELVET UNDERGROUND by listening to TSA’s “Adventure Tuesday”; It should be compulsory listening before even conceiving the thought of a forming a band."

Bio

The Second Academy has been described as sounding like everything from the Who to Queens of the Stone Age. This is because their music is not only varied -- rocking at times, at times quiet and subtle -- but also because their sound is distinctive and new, and therefore hard to pin down. They have vocal harmonies and acoustic guitars, but are not singer/songwriter or twee. They have heavy pounding songs, yet are not metal or grunge. It's almost as if the Kinks had been updated and were set loose in Robert Pollard's garage. The midwest influence is strong: Balaban's first band, the Spiveys, were nearly on midwest label Amphetamine Reptile, and some of the experimental influence of Atlanta GA's Elephant 6 label can be heard in some of the recordings. Their music is a conglomeration of the influences of sincere and unique bands set to grooves both dark and bright.

Formed in 2009 by Eric Balaban after the end of his previous band, the Beautiful Mothers, the Second Academy has recorded 2 LPs and has played in New York (at CMJ in 2009), LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Portland, Tacoma, and various venues in and around Seattle, their hometown. Both of their records can be heard in rotation on various radio stations around the US.

The Second Academy's music has been included in the independent film The Revenant, which has won many independent awards on the festival circuit in NY, London, Toronto, and Las Vegas, among other cities.
