I REALLY WAS NOT EXPECTING A HARDCORE SOUND FROM THIS BAND WHO LOOKS MOSTLY CLEAN CUT. IT ALWAYS AMUSES ME BEFORE THE SHOW HOW POLITE AND DOCILE EVERYONE IS, BUT WHEN THEY HIT THE STAGE.........DIFFERENT STORY. THIS 4 PIECE BAND RANGED FROM STRAIGHT TO HARD TO METAL ROCK. AT FIRST , I THREW THEM INTO THE MOLD OF METAL AS THE FIRST 4 SONGS SOUNDED ALIKE. GRUNGY GROWLING VOCALS WITH HARD GUITARS. THIS IS SOMETHING I SEE AND HEAR QUITE OFTEN. BUT THEY MIXED IT UP BY CHANGING PACE , SPEEDS AND VOCALS. I WAS GLAD TO SEE IT. BEING DIVERSIFIED IS KEY IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS I BELIEVE. ONE MUST SET THEMSELVES AWAY FROM THE 1000'S OF BANDS OUT THERE. IT IS A DIFFICULT TASK AS IT SHOULD BE. I ENJOYED THE 2ND HALF OF THEIR SET AND GOT A CHANCE TO MEET ALL THE BAND MEMBERS AS I USUALLY DO. I BOUGHT SHOTS FOR SOME OF THEM TOO. THERE CROWD WAS COOL , POLITE , DRINKERS , TIPPERS , AND SOME SMOKING GIRLS........THIS ADDED TO THE FUN. OVERALL I DUG THIS BAND, - Chris (owner of The Nail)

During a time when hard rock and metal is celebrated for its sameness; originality and innovation seem all but forgotten. Philadelphia is welcoming a new pioneering force in music. The Shadow Self, founded in 2005, is performing distortion-drenched and hauntingly picturesque songs that conjure explicit images of emotion. The music is engaging, filled with catchy melodies using emphatic rhythms, dense bass and drum sound, and driving vocals. The guitar play between Steve and Brian is clever and filled with intricate patterns. Matt�s bass riffs and licks are doubling complex, with strong clear articulation. Damien plays drums with considerable speed and coordination, using beats that do not overwhelm the music, but rather sweep the listener into the sound.
The Shadow Self is currently circulating the Philly and surrounding areas. The three-song Halfbreed Chronicles EP can be heard weekly at various venues. The songs are influenced by major bands such as Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Clutch, and Ween just to name a few. The sound though, is like no other. The music is written to entertain a variety of tastes, and at the same time never sounding like anyone else. Halfbreed Chronicles is best described as groove metal mixed with thrash and progressive rock.
The band's complex, almost compositional approach with lyrics and guitar play can lead you to a sensory experience equal to war. Its fantasy and escapist quality will get your adrenaline pumping and give you power to rebel, against nothing in general.
