Led by Canadian guitarist Julia Muth, London-based trio The Sharp Tongues have been busily racking up high praise and sweet support spots in anticipation of their debut full-length due out in early 2013. Having cut their teeth supporting the likes of British Sea Power, Tweak Bird, Dan Sartain, Urge Overkill, Art Brut and The Rezillos, they were hand-picked by Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs, Dead Weather, Greenhornes) to support the Greenhornes for a UK tour. They have also had the pleasure of being main support to Kitty, Daisy & Lewis for shows far and wide across the UK and Europe. Most recently a sold-out 5000 capacity outdoor show in Berlin where The ‘Tongues wowed the crowd with a rapturous performance.
Backed by twin brothers Stewart and Paul Summers (Ten Benson), on drums and bass respectively, The Sharp Tongues’ stripped down, intense songs pack a real punch with the twins’ punk upbringing and rock and roll leanings adding a distinctive growl to the mix. After capturing this intensity on a recordable format, they released their debut 7” single ‘So Old/I Found Love’ on the 31st of October, 2011 after many requests from their growing fan base. To their delight, both tracks have been played numerous times by Marc Riley (BBC6), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC6) and John Kennedy (XFM) and they were personally invited by Marc Riley to do a live session on his BBC show on Dec. 13.
Although The Sharp Tongues’ music shares certain elements with American garage-punk originators The Cramps, naive minimalists Beat Happening and the hook-y romantic pop of The Buzzcocks and The Modern Lovers, Julia doesn’t consider herself to be particularly influenced by any of these things. Instead, she considers her style to be avant-garage “I like the sounds of garage music, but I’m just not interested in regurgitating what’s already been done a thousand times” and herself a song writing-savant “I’m not concerned with standard song structure or knowing what key I’m in. My songs just come out as they are - If they come out good, I keep playing them.”
The Sharp Tongues have also recently begun hosting a series of showcases at London’s coolest new venue The Wheelbarrow in Camden. Each event has been a night to remember with a scorching set by The ‘Tongues and handpicked support by the best new bands in London. Past support bands have included Swanton Bombs (Domino), Chips for the Poor , Blasted and Los Pepes (both ex-Winnebago Deal), Ducks Fly To Moscow (ex-Tokyo Dragons) and Charlie Waller (ex-Rumblestrips).
