The Shy Lips – “Nowadays”
MARCH 22, 2013 AT 1:26 PM
The Shy Lips

The Shy Lips, hailing from Göteborg, released their second EP “Nowadays” earlier this year. It’s fun to listen to this music, as it’s unpredictable, happy and with a mix of styles that gives me a sense of recognition, but when I try to catch what it is, it escapes me. There’s an intimate garage-punkish sound, with a laidback, natural attitude, like if they would have entered a stage in Manchester in the eighties as a warm-up for The Happy Mondays. They send out tentacles to the sixties, with The Kinks as the most obvious reference, there’s a dose of The Smiths, ska-rhytms and then also indie pop vibes. Well, great music in any case. - meadowmusic.se

"The Shy Lips - Nowadays EP Review"

The Shy Lips ::: Nowadays’ EP Review
In Reviews / By David Jordan / 3 March 2013
The Shy Lips

These Swedish indie rockers have been together for about a year and have already released two EPs. However, this is not surprising when you listen to their second EP, Nowadays, as it is full of energy and verve.

The musicianship on this EP is excellent, in particular the formidable guitar riffing throughout the record. The band is clearly influenced by ska which accounts for the hyper energy and the guitar heavy approach. The fine musicianship also recalls the early work of fellow Swedes, The Cardigans, but they don’t have quite the same lyrical prowess. The record sounds great, with quality production and mixing.

This band calls itself The Shy Lips but there is nothing shy about them. The group has plenty of youth, attitude and confidence – a good mix for a new, up and coming and talented band. The only compliant this writer would have is that the singer is, at times, slightly out of key and playing live this might possibly be more evident. However, it is a strong voice and suited to the music just as the lyrics are strong for a band whose mother tongue is not English.

This is a good band that deserves a chance for success. If they can play this well after only a year together it is exciting to think what they could achieve in the future.

"The Shy Lips (EP)"

Songwriting - 3.75 || Music - 3.75 || Vocals - 3.5
Web: www.theshylips.bandcamp.com
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Genre: Indie Rock
Key Tracks: When I Get Down (From This Mountain)

The Shy Lips have climbed that great mountain of Indie Rock and planted their musical flag. On with their recently released self-titled EP, these Swedish rockers are here to prove to the world that they know how to rock. Clearly meant to play together, the members of The Shy Lips showcase their superior musicianship and creative songwriting
talents on each of the 4 songs that comprise their new EP.

From the outset, The Shy Lips waste no time establishing their sound on the song, When I Get Down (From This Mountain). This track has a party rocking britpop feel that is reminiscent of the award winning sound of The Beatles, placing The Shy Lips on their own journey toward impacting major music awards shows someday. The songwriting was
great and the music outstanding. I could feel the upbeat mood in which this song was written, and I found myself singing along with the catchy hook.

Other cool songs on The Shy Lips EP include: "On The Sofas Next To The Dancefloor" and "Without You". Each of these tracks continues the band's upbeat british pop-rock sound, making them an easy fit for any live rock venue in North America, Europe and Asia.

The only drawback I saw here was the fact that this EP doesn't offer any down tempo music. Other than that, I couldn't find anything wrong with The Shy Lips' project and I hope to hear more from them in 2013. - iaemagazine.com

"The Shy Lips på Pustervik"

Translated version:

Wow, The Shy Lips are ready for the big breakthrough!

It's seldom I see bands so early in the boot that are so attuned and directly offensive. They don't hesitate. They don't compromise. They play.

With only one EP behind them one might think that the band did not have much to lean on, but then you have neither heard the EP nor seen The Shy Lips perform the material live. Best, both live and on the EP, is When I Get Down (From The Mountain) with its efficient guitars and beautiful rhythms. Those elements can also be attributed to On The Sofa's Next To The Dancefloor. Dance-friendly, tight indierock music.

There are too few rock bands of the insanely confident sort and I look forward to hear what comes next from these Gothenburg guys.

Oj, vad The Shy Lips är redo för det stora genombrottet.

Det är sällan jag ser band så tidigt i uppstarten som är så samspelta och direkt offensiva. Man fegar inte. Man kompromissar inte. Man spelar.

Med endast en EP i ryggen kan man spontant tänka att bandet inte har så mycket att luta sig mot, men då har man vare sig hört nämnda EP eller sett The Shy Lips framföra materialet live. Bäst både live och på EP:n är When I Get Down (From The Mountain) med sina effektiva gitarrer och sköna rytmer. Även On The Sofas Next To The Dancefloor kan tillskrivas de styrkorna. Dansant, snortight rockmusik.

Det finns för få rockband av den sinnessjukt självsäkra sorten och jag ser fram emot vad som kommer härnäst från Göteborgskillarna. - Popkultur.nu med Jonas Strandberg

Bio

The Shy Lips formed in late 2011 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was the brainchild of singer Adam and bassist Victor, born on the travels in Europe and South America where the two met and bonded, and it became a reality when they moved to the vibrant music city of Gothenburg. After hooking up with drummer Anton and guitarist Alex and later joined by Adams brother Jonas on guitar, the band now had members originating from Morocco, Poland and Sweden. An eclectic mix of the members different geographical and musical backgrounds took form and made the song ideas inspired by those travels into the daring and catchy indierock that signifies The Shy Lips. Releasing their first four track demo EP in march 2012, The Shy Lips spent the spring and summer playing and gaining attention at local venues. Qucikly building a reputation as a highly energetic and stylish live act, the band was offered a chance to do their own CCTV Sessions gig at the Nudie Jeans Store in Gothenburg, following the likes of Band of Horses, The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Little Dragon. Club Woody West, one of the best established and most respected music institutions in southern Sweden, featuring acts such as Yeasayer, Bon Iver and The Vaccines, got their eyes on this up and coming band and booked The Shy Lips for a much praised performance in late summer. Their second EP "Nowadays", released in 2013, took the drive and focused, non-compromising songwriting further, getting described as sounding like the bastard sons of Pete Doherty and Julian Casablancas. Now attracting the attention of Swedish management companies and producers, the band is currently recording new material in Svenska Grammofonstudion, set to be released in February 2014. A european tour is booked for April and May, including stops in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Spain and more.
