The Shys

The Shys unique update of Soul, Gospel, Rock & Blues has its roots in the small humble town of San Clemente, CA. Famous for its west coast white house, its the Southern California coast where Richard Nixon sought refuge as well as a place where vocalist/guitarist, Kyle Krone and bass player, Alex Kweskin grew up as childhood friends. Kweskin, who learned to play piano and drums while still in grade school, and Krone both had aspirations of being in a band early on, but it didn't really take shape until they befriended guitarist Chris Wulff, a newcomer who came to town in 97 eventually teaching Krone to play guitar. At 14 and as a trio, the band honed their sound throughout their high school years. After graduation, the band continued practicing and playing live, even when Wulff left the band temporarily for a six-month stay in Europe.
Then know as The Gunshys, they became a much talked about live act in the Los Angeles, Silver Lake and Echo park scenes. Eventually, Wulff came back to join the band and within a few months, the group signed to Sire Warner Brothers. Almost immediately after signing, the band was in the studio recording their debut album. The result was Astoria, which was released in summer 2006. The album's lead single, "Call in the Cavalry," was featured on shows such as HBO's Entourage and three other tracks from the album became regular features on MTVs Fast Inc. Shortly after that, their video of Call in The Cavalry was frequently becoming played on MTV.
The band toured the U.S. and the U.K that summer, fall and winter and their reputation of high energy live shows continued to grow, they tear up the stage with their fuzzed-up, super-rock like The Who in the early days, Rolling Stone. Soon the band was sharing the stage with some of rocks greatest names at club shows and festivals in North America, The UK and Canada. As 2006 came to a close, the band began work on there very own studio in a factory space they took a lease out on. They also were joined by two childhood friends from San Clemente, who soon became full time band members.
With new drummer Tony Cupito and pianist Riley Stephenson, the package seems more than complete. The Shys, all located in the same town and with an average age of 22, begin to develop their sound into something refreshing and unique. The Shys just finished recording their second album which was self-produced and plan on releasing it in the early summer of 2008 on the idie label, Aeronaut Records. As they gear up to release their new record and tour America and Europe, there loyal fan base continues to grow. Look out for them in the near future as this band has long-term plans.
