"The Side - Forever Changing EP Review"

A GREAT band from the Highlands who all at once seem to be baggy, Britpop and Ben Folds Five wrapped up in pop melodies. There's sometimes even Acid House piano and Bon Jovi synths thrown in for good measure. They remind me of Irish band The Frank and Walters who could throw everything but the kitchen sink into a song with dazzling results. Forever Changing kicks off like a Britpop anthem with lyrics: "You are a victim of fashion/but I don't see what's the attraction/the songs you sing are overrated/there ain't no shame in being dated". It's a clever, uplifting tune which around the three minute mark breaks down into dance and even blues. Second tune Round Here is abit Toploader for me but the band led by singer and guitarist Hugh Winton swing up again with piano-led thump of The Circle which featured on the great Fat Hippy Records compilation - The Daily Record (Scotland)

"Red Stripe Music Awards 09 Review"

Burns Night 250th anniversary and it was all go in Scotland, especially with 3 Red Stripe Music Award gigs in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
Moshulu was the location for the Aberdeen gig where recent sell out gigs have included the likes of Hot Chip to Cage the Elephant who literally had the floor jumping. So what about the local talent...

The second band, The Side, who were late due to a trip to the local butcher for a special, wasted no time in getting straight to it. The Ross-Shire four have played with the likes of Tim Burgess from the Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets and the Bluetones. The Bluetones influence certainly comes across in some of their songs yet with a more soulful voice, other tracks had a more reggae guitar bass and not to mention the sing along harmonies and brilliant piano licks that were apparent throughout - the keyboard player was not dissimilar to the 2008 RSMA Winner Klaus, kicking off his shoes and socks and jumping around the stage, a joy to watch.

"Nowhere Left To Run ALBUM Review"

THE debut album from the great Ross-shire band. I've already reviewed tracks Forever Changing and The Circle (which both make) and Round Here (which doesn't).
Nowhere Left To Run includes new single Nowhere Left To Run. There's a definite eighties soft rock feel to this song. Another Time, Another Place is a heartfelt piano-led ballad it could be a future X Factor winner's tune. The band seem happiest with soft rock, piano heavy tunes like One Fine Day or the McFly bounciness of Top Of The World but there's some ska on Going Nowhere and the Baggy thrill of album closer Sunrise which ends Nowhere Left To Run with some big bold summer harmonies and some frantic guitar playing. If Sunrise is a taste of what's to come this band still have a long way to run.
Nowhere Left To Run is out now.
