The Simple Groove

BandFolk

The Simple Groove's first full-length release combines raw and aggressive guitar, smooth vocals, and clever lyrics into an acoustic folk sound that captivates their listeners.

Biography

The Simple Groove is comprised of James Thompson’s acoustic guitar and the vocals of Chelsea Stiles. Based on influences that span contemporary folk to modern jazz, the brother-sister duo fuses rhythmic guitar, smooth vocals, and poignant lyrics into a sound that captivates their listeners.

The Brother: James

- Plays the acoustic guitar, mouth organ, and foot box.

- Lives in the city in a two-room apartment with his fiancé, her two cats, a gecko, and some fish.

- Enjoys independent music without bias to genre.

- Is currently employed by a company where he is required to wear a suit.

The Sister: Chelsea

- Sings, does percussion here and there, and is currently learning the violin.

- Lives in the country on ten acres of land with her husband, two cats, and two Saint Bernards.

- Enjoys folk singers, singer songwriters, jazz, and electronica.

- Is currently employed by a company where she is only sometimes required to wear a suit.

Together: The Simple Groove

The music James and Chelsea write portrays the people and places around them--working class towns, their tales and adventures, and the struggles and happiness they’ve seen their friends and family endure. As the songs they create become a part of them, they also evolve into stories that people can relate to.

In 2005 The Simple Groove carried out the hard work they had been putting into their musical careers by recording and releasing their first full-length album. Entitled Coming Up Slowly, the album draws in its listeners by combining an innovative folk guitar sound with a smooth, delicate voice.

My Back Porch

Written By: Chelsea Stiles

i've got a strange little view from my back porch
i can see her in her kitchen when she walks through the door
she's got a baby on her left hip and a bottle in her hand
looking for a life that no one seems to understand
until that day comes she's gonna do what she can

that's what i see, that's what i see

there's a man on the corner with a sign that says "hungry"
he's been pickin' up the change from the gutter since sunday
and from my back porch i can see them walk on by
ignoring that man, ignoring his sign
i hope when they get home their heads will let them sleep tight

that's what i see, that's what i see

it's from my back porch that i see you walking my way
i've got trash in my yard, broken windows, tattered doorway
i'd like to warn you of the weather and the cold that's coming through
i'm scared you'll keep on moving like the others seem to do
instead you stop to listen
cause the others ain't like you

that's what they see, that's what they see

Fireflies

Written By: Chelsea Stiles

i remember that door to your backyard
it kept me safe from curfew
and it never shut too hard
behind me as i walked up
the five stairs to your porch
can you come out and play?
i've got one jar, we need more

and we step into night
we catch the fireflies
we'll watch them burn
and then we'll watch them take flight
they echo the moon
and its strong sun
while the days stay long,
in your backyard
we'll run

and here among the wet grass
i'm thinking of the times
we stayed up late and watched the stars
and laughed at all the things we'd find
that didn't seem quite perfect
but we loved them all the same
and then they'd shine their light upon us
they'd help us find our way

we step into night
we catch the fireflies
we'll watch them burn
and then we'll watch them take flight
they echo the moon
and its strong sun
while the days stay long,
in your backyard
we'll run

i remember that door to your backyard
it kept me safe from curfew
and it never shut too hard
behind me as i walked up
the five stairs to your porch
can you come out and play?
i've got one jar, we need more

and we step into night
we catch the fireflies
we'll watch them burn
and then we'll watch them take flight
they echo the moon
and its strong sun
while the days stay long,
in your backyard
we'll run

Everything

Written By: Chelsea Stiles

I’m tired of looking
For a place that I belong
It's about three blocks from somewhere
Halfway between here and gone
I got some time
That I plan to waste on myself
Gonna go out where the desert
Meets the canyon red

I won't look down
I’ll just enjoy the ride
I’ll see you where the still point meets the eye
I'm taking in everything
Before it passes by

Sick of waiting on something
Something never seems to arrive
She usually gets here late
And tells me she's gotta be home before nine
I learned a lesson
gonna tell it to my teachers
know what you do
love what you've done
and keep reachin', keep reachin'

Let’s not look down
Let’s just enjoy the ride
I’ll see you where the still point meets the eye
Let’s take in everything
Before it passes by

Still learning to keep my distance
While keeping my heart in the same place
Gotta put up the borders
But remain outside the frame
I got three wishes
Gonna grant them to my family
Good life, good love,
And four walls to keep them safe

Let’s not look down
Let’s just enjoy the ride
I’ll see you where the still point meets the eye
Let’s take in everything
Before it passes by

Gotta get ready
For the places life takes me
Gotta leave behind
That dusty, favorite chair
I bought some therapy
Tryin’ to keep my sanity
She said Chelsea
You’ve got nothin’…
You’ve got nothin’ to hide

I just found that it's useful
To laugh myself to sleep
Sometimes even helpful
To pick myself up off my knees
I got some money
That I plan to spend on my friends
Gonna take 'em all out drinking
And pretend we own the sky

We won't look down
We'll just enjoy the ride
We'll see you where the still point meets the eye
We're takin' in everything
Before it passes by
We're takin' in everything
Before it passes by
