"Some Upcoming Shows"

The Sixth Son (below) begins a monthly residency at Los Globos, appropriately enough, on Monday, May Sixth, and I was asked to present so I will don two hats and present as Feed Your Head and Radio Free Silver Lake. I also have first hand knowledge of just how good Neil Mallick, and whatever band he puts together, is. The first time I saw him was at a show hosted by Rebecca Balin at 3 of Clubs last October when his only accompaniment was a guy on a saxophone. A sax and an electric guitar might seem like an odd duet, but the sounds they made were uncanny and it was a completely involving set highlighted by Neil's remarkably flexible voice coupled with his powerful, Hendrix-influenced raging guitar.

I immediately grabbed him for a Feed Your Head show at Lot 1 in November. At another show I hosted in December, The Sixth Son had become a band, joined by various audience members which turned into a musical free-for-all and a highly memorable night. When he played for a recent show in April it was as a solo, so I can say with confidence, no matter how many (or any) other musicians he plays with, he always delivers a surprising, and remarkably skillful set. And everyone always has a good time. - Feed Your Head Today

"The L.A. Show Low Down (Or: "We Should Let This Dead Guy Sleep...")"

Radio Free Silver Lake and Feed Your Head are presenting the first week of the residency of The Sixth Son (at right) at Los Globos, whose performances at some of my Lot 1 shows have placed him firmly in the position of bands and musicians to watch. Rounding out the bill nicely are Judson, Fort King and Matthew Teardrop. - Radio Free Silver Lake

"Feed Your Head Presents November 3 at Lot 1"

The Sixth Son are another band I recently saw at a Rebecca Balin show at 3 of Clubs a couple of weeks ago, headlined by Downtown/Union. When shaggy-haired Neil Mallick (above) took the stage with his guitar and acompanied by another guy on saxophone I couldn't even anticipate what I was about to hear. Virtuoso guitar playing stood out, but when this expressive tenor cam out of his mouth, I was transfixed.

And the songs were unpredictable and hypnotic, with deep penetrating lyrics. His friend, Brian Tran, on saxophone provided an astonishing range of varied sounds, including sounding just like a string section at one point. How did he do that? When the set was over, far too soon, I was left, mouth agape. I made sure to make the aquaintance of this remarkable musician right away and when a slot opened up on this bill, I jumped to ask him to. If you attend this show you'll be among The Sixth Son's early fans. Appearing at 10. - Feed Your Head Today

Bio

Neil Mallick cut his teeth as an artist playing in the counter-culturalist dives & derelict campfires of Post-Recession America.

Described as a Down & Out Musician of Philadelphia by journalist Matthew Albasi, as a Bluesman of Bessemer, AL by living-link Henry Gip Gipson, & as the Chanteuse of Slab City by TIME Video correspondent James Hall, Neil has carved a distinctive, multi-faceted trail with his main project, The Sixth Son.

The Self, Titled EP - The Sixth Son's self-produced debut, soon to be re-released on Records Ad Nauseam - served as the musical backdrop for multiple tours of North America, traveling as far south as Guadalajara & Mexico City and as far north as Victoria, BC & Toronto.  Through all of this, Neil Mallick alternated between Los Angeles & Slab City as a home-base while working on new material, and very recently he has attracted the attention of Records Ad Nauseam in Hollywood, CA, who will be releasing The Sixth Son's debut LP How Real Is Real? in late 2014.

The sound & aesthetic of The Sixth Son can be described as Singer-Songwriter/Futurist, tapping into the deep well of common turmoils & triumphs, while looking forward, but always speaking to the moment.  Los Angeles music journalist Brad Roberts writes of the live-performance:  "[I] have first hand knowledge of just how good Neil Mallick, and whatever band he puts together, is.  The first time I saw him... his only accompaniment was a guy on a saxophone... the sounds they made were uncanny and it was a completely involving set highlighted by Neil's remarkably flexible voice coupled with his powerful, Hendrix-influenced raging guitar... At another show I hosted in December, The Sixth Son had become a band... which turned into a musical free-for-all... in April it was as a solo, so I can say with confidence, no matter how many (or any) other musicians he plays with, he always delivers a surprising, remarkably skillful set."

The Sixth Son will be releasing How Real Is Real? on various analogue/digital formats with Records Ad Nauseam at the end of the year, and Neil will be embarking on his first European tour to support the record.  2015 and beyond should see the continuation of releases, publications, & playing music in the world, for people.
