"Penguin Eggs - Album review"

“Thierry Arseneault (drums, percussion), Stewart Burrows (vocals, acoustic guitar), Jonathan Moorman (violin, vocals) and Tim Walsh (bass, vocals) are the Skivvies and they come from Montreal. Their motto is “Good Hard Folk is just what you need” and I, for one, won't disagree.
They play hard, like to party and expect their audiences to do the same, which is fair enough really, because they are very good at what they do. The songs are all originals, written by Terry Simpson and Stewart Burrows, and sung with guts and conviction by the latter, who possesses a voice reminiscent of The Undertones' Feargal Sharkey - and that's high praise, indeed.
It's not all foot stomping mayhem, however; there are tender moments, too, like the ballad A Long Time Yet, which is beautifully languid.
I'm sure you know that skivvies are men's underwear. Well now it has another meaning entirely – it stands for Good Hard Folk.”

"Dirty Linen - Album review"

“Every Town has at least one: the good-time, uptempo, rockin' fiddle-lead band that's great fun in the pub on a Saturday night with a few drinks in you. What's usually lacking in the light of day is the songs, but that's not the case with the Montreal-based four-piece band THE SKIVVIES. Songwriter/lead vocalist Stewart Burrows (and his co-writer Terry Simpson) has come up with a fun set of uptempo, roots-rocking, alt-counrty (in a distinct Canadian sort of way) songs with catchy melodies and great sing-along choruses. The band adds in some Celtic elements – banjo, fiddle, whistle, mandolin and the the like – and tosses in a few sets of dance tunes to keep things lively. And what more can you ask from a band named after a pair of men's underwear! Recommended.”

Bio

Canada’s two most influential magazines on folk music have praised the debut album of The Skivvies.

Canada’s premiere folk music magazine Penguin Eggs opined:

"The Skivvies come from Montreal. Their motto is - Good Hard Folk is just what you need - and we, for one, won't disagree.

They play hard, like to party and expect their audiences to do the same, which is fair enough really, because they are very good at what they do."

And international folk magazine Dirty Linen said:

"Songwriter/lead vocalist Stewart Burrows…. has come up with a fun set of uptempo, roots-rocking, alt-counrty (in a distinct Canadian sort of way) songs with catchy melodies and great sing-along choruses."

The Skivvies are the real thing. A group with talent, musical sense, and a swinging, smiling band of rogues that give a high adrenaline show. It is in live performance that these bright lights really shine.

This is a band that honestly loves alt-country and roots classics, and mixes them with a punk sensibility that remains tuneful.

And perhaps most surprising of all, they have a guitar case full of heartfelt and catchy original tunes.

This band loves performing, 'cause they they really have something to say from deep inside their bar thumping tunes.

And they have the talent it takes to say it, play it, and mean it

Montreal singer-songwriter Stewart Burrows pens the tunes and fronts the band.
Versatile instrumentalist and arranger Tim Walsh puts his expert hand to guitar and mandolin as Ben Griffin lays down the bass for this classic and unconventional collective.

If have an urge to feel the need to stomp your feet, thump a pint on your table, or sway to lyrical and heartfelt music, you do not want to miss this band.
