""The SLAGS" rock Poggie Tavern"

SLAGS Web siteThe West Seattle psychedelic band The SLAGS put the metal back in metal, unlike their name suggests. They punked out Poggie's in the Junction recently with original numbers and covers. The versatile foursome played country and reggae, too.

Bryan Grossman and Tim Healy join twin brothers Bill and Mark Curtain. They are produced by popular West Seattle dynamo, Chas Redmond, who was on hand hosting and doing sound.

Popular Poggie bartender, “Big Jim” held down the fort. “Everybody has a good time here, and we don’t charge a cover,” he said. “People think we just have rock music here. But come on a night when we have jazz, blues, and country.”

If you’re lucky, Big Jim will tell you about his role in Northern Exposure, if you can hear him over the high-volume of bands and fans.

"I’m with the Band"

Seizing the day seems to be the driving force behind a number of local midlife bands. “We decided it was now or never,” says 44-year-old parent and ESL teacher Tim Healy. His punk band, The Slags, consists of three high school buddies originally from Buffalo, New York, who decided to take their weekly jam sessions one step further after settling down and starting families. The Slags, whose original songs incorporate politically charged lyrics, are a mainstay at West Seattle’s Poggie Tavern and other local pubs, such as Ballard’s Old Pequliar and the Highliner Pub, all of which have proven welcoming to midlife bands.

The Slags draw a diverse crowd. classic-rock fans, punk rockers, 60s-fellow-travelers and most noticeably - international students in the Seattle area. It is a solid fact that these young fans have formed the only conga line in the history of West Seattle's most authentic music venue, Poggie Tavern (see Photo Gallery).
