Rockin', swingin', bluesy band fronted by a dynamic female vocalist/keyboardist (a little Angela Strehli, a bit of Chryssie Hynde) -- great originals, unique covers, cool standards.

Biography

The Snake Charmers are a rockin', swingin', bluesy band, twice nominated (2009 and 2010) for Houston Press Music Awards for blues.

After years in other music ventures, The Snake Charmers began in 2002 when spouses Will Blumentritt and Marie Angell created a band to “play what they like, and like what they play.” Keeping it in the family, they added eldest son Eric Blumentritt on drums and relative through the “Brotherhood of Man,” guitarist Larry Meeker.

The Snake Charmers' well-received album, "Been Gone Too Long," features 10 contemporary blues tracks written by The Snake Charmers' vocalist/keyboardist Marie Angell. An eclectic mix of blues, blues rock, and The Snake Charmers own brand of charm itself, the music leads the listener through the breadth of The Snake Charmers' music, capturing slices of life that everyone can relate to.

The Snake Charmers' music is heard worldwide via broadcast and internet radio as well as a number of blues podcasts.

Their song "Big Big Love" was selected for the compilation, "Love Letter to New Orleans," which was released in October 2009.

Lyrics

Can't Trust a Heart

Written By: Marie Angell

Your man leaves
He won’t be back again
The heart don’t believe
It enjoys the pain
You can’t trust a heart
It can’t be your friend
You can’t trust a heart
It just don’t mend

A heart says love, love takes time
Someday soon he will be mine
It’ll cry and cry — won’t let you sleep
You can’t trust a heart
It plays for keeps

Can’t trust a heart
It never forgets
A cautious thing,
It hedges all its bets
Tells you he’ll be back
Even though he won’t
Don’t trust a heart
I beg you, don’t

A heart says love, love takes time
Someday soon he will be mine
It’ll cry and cry — won’t let you sleep
You can’t trust a heart
It plays for keeps

Don’t trust a heart
It won’t leave you alone
It just don’t care how you weep and moan
Can’t trust a heart
It survives on bones
It swears to you
That he’s coming home

No Mercy

Written By: Marie Angell

You come here cryin’
And you moan and groan
You beg me, baby,
Won’t you please come home
It’s just too hard being all alone
I’m so unhappy living on my own
I love you, baby, can’t you see
Oh, baby, baby, have mercy on me

You showed no mercy
When you said we’re through
You showed no mercy
When you found somebody new
Now you’re back,
Beggin' on bended knee—
I love you baby now can't you see
Oh baby have mercy on me?

No mercy, baby
When I cried all night
No mercy, baby
When I said this just ain’t right
You showed no mercy
Now you’re beggin’ me please
Oh baby please
Where was your mercy, darlin’—
Where was your mercy on me?

You treated me bad
You made me cry
You tore my heart up
Then you told me goodbye
Where was your mercy, baby
Where was your mercy on me?
You showed no mercy, baby
You showed no mercy on me.

I believe it’s time
To cut you loose
I don’t want to listen
To your sad excuse
I’m sure enjoying
Your sweet misery
If you want mercy, baby,
Don’t come cryin’ to me

No mercy, baby
When I cried all night
No mercy, baby
When I said this just ain’t right
You showed no mercy
Now you’re beggin’ me please
Oh baby please
Where was your mercy, darlin’
Where was your mercy on me?
Where was your mercy, baby
Where was your mercy on me?

(I Wanna Be a) Hoochie Mama

Written By: Marie Angell

I wanna be a hoochie mama
That is what I want to be
I wanna be a hoochie mama
That is what I want to be
When I walk into a room, baby,
I want everyone to look at me.

I wanna be a hoochie mama
And steal other women's men
I wanna be a hoochie mama
And steal other women's men
I will use them and abuse them
And then send them back again

I'll stay out late
Won't get up 'til noon
Drink black chicory coffee
And feast on macaroons

I wanna be a hoochie mama
And steal other women's men
I will use them and abuse them
And then send them running home to mama again

I wanna be a hoochie mama
And wear a red satin dress
I wanna be a hoochie mama
And wear a red satin dress
I will put on too much lipstick
And then I'll flaunt my ample chest

I'll stay out late
Won't get up 'til noon
Drink Community Coffee
And feast on macaroons

I wanna be a hoochie mama
And wear a red satin dress
I will put on too much lipstick
And then I'll flaunt my ample chest

I wanna be a hoochie mama
That is what I wanna be
I wanna be a hoochie mama
That is what I wanna be
I wanna be a hoochie mama
I believe it's destiny!

Big Big Love

Written By: Marie Angell

She called him Big Daddy
He called her Little Lady
They had the kind of love that’d
Drive you crazy
It was a big love
A big, big love

He’d say, I bet I love you, honey
She just say, That’s easy money
They had a big love
A big, big love
It was a big love — a big, big love

CHORUS:

She’d say, Hey Big Daddy
She’d say, Hey Big Daddy
He’d say, Hey Little Lady, won’t you get on over here?

They’d fight like cats
Under a full moon
They’d howl like dogs
Singing to a bad tune
They had a big love
A big, big love

Then they’d put on a record
By old Cole Porter
You could feel the walls shakin'
All the way to the Quarter
They had a big love
A big, big love
It was a big love — a big, big love

She had a gin voice,
but she never touched a drop
He was tall as a phone pole
And as bald on top
They had a big love
A big big love

When the big storm came
Like the wind we blew
Where they landed
I never knew
With their big love,
Their big, big love
It was a big love — a big, big love

Ain't Nothin' But the Blues

Written By: Marie Angell

Ain’t nothin’ but the blues
Pilin’ up around my door
Ain’t got nothin’ left to lose
I seen it all before
When you only hear bad news
Ain’t nothin’ but the blues

The stormy winds will blow
The heart is gonna break
Don’t know where I'm gonna go
How much more I'm gonna take
This sad and lonesome pain
Ain’t nothing but the blues

Troubles come and go
It ain’t nothing new
Got a mountain’s worth of woe
An old story but it’s true
A tale that’s told in tears
Ain’t nothing but the blues

A truckload full of pain
A suitcase stuffed with bills
A lifetime’s worth of rain
Call it what you will
But whatever name you choose
Ain’t nothing but the blues

I Wanna Do Right

Written By: Marie Angell

I wanna do right
I want you next to me
I want you to agree
That you need me tonight

I wanna do right
I don’t want to play my cards wrong
Don’t want to come on too strong
I want my touch to be light.

CHORUS

I just can’t slip away
Without having my say
And if I take a chance on you
I’m gonna see it through

Because I wanna do right
Let’s explore the possibilities
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
I’ve got you in my sights.

I wanna do right
Oh, baby, let’s hit the road
It’s time our wild oats were sowed
Let’s scatter ‘em tonight

I wanna do right
I want you to take a look
I’m gonna bait my hook
And see if you bite

I wanna do right
If I rub against you
Will that start a spark or two?
Oh, baby, it might.
