In their quick year and a half of existence, The Social Threat has covered a lot of ground. No strangers to the Canadian independant music scene, band members Wade Hodgman, Kaleb Motz, and Kyle Hodgman spent previous years in other bands. In October 2009, The Social Threat was conceived with focus and purpose. Their goal is to address social issues of today with a punk rock attitude that demands reaction.
Before December of 2009 was through, The Social Threat had written and recorded an EP while finding the time to share the stage with Winnipeg’s “Fame” and Calgary’s “Ghostkeeper.” In January 2010, The Social Threat got the honor of opening up a show for BC’s “You Say Party! We Say Die!” In the following months, The Social Threat would tour all around Alberta and Saskatchewan, and independantly release their EP, while playing with Calgary’s “Madcowboys,” Edmonton’s “Weekend Kids,” and “One Shot Left.”
Looking into the near future while continuously writing new material, The Social Threat are planning to keep touring around western Canada. In May of 2011, The Social Threat will be recording a full length album and will spend the rest of the summer supporting their album on the road from Manitoba to British Columbia.
While The Social Threat's musical influences come from all across the genre board, their sound is specifically punk rock. Bands like MxPx, Slick Shoes, and Dogwood permeated their early years, while other bands like Strike Anywhere, Good Riddance, and The Unseen pushed their way in later on.
But The Social Threat is more influenced by the world around them and their beliefs than by the music that they listen to. Addressing issues like political corruption, world hunger, and media manipulation, all from a redemption angle, The Social Threat wants to inspire change. And they walk their talk. They have raised money for Haiti relief and for a group of people to go to Costa Rica to build houses and provide medicine. They sponsor children through Compassion and have collected food for their local food bank.
What is most important to The Social Threat is people; the ones they know, the ones they don't, the ones they meet at shows, the ones that don't care, the ones whose lives they can hopefully change by their message and their music.
