Bio

The Sooners are the offspring of country music legend Hansford Sooner. With the help of his band, The Teges Creek Trio, Hansford topped the country music charts in the early 1950's with hits like “Out & About”, “Swinging Bridge”, and “The Moon Don’t Shine ’til the Sun Goes Down.”
Hansford was loved by many women and is rumored to have fathered more than 30 children by as many women. In fact, the only Sooner children to share the same mother are Hansford Jr. and Wiley who were born during Hansford’s notorious marriage to Hollywood starlet, Dorie Riley Sooner. Dorie died while giving birth to Wiley and Hansford Sr. was forced to raise the two boys on his own.
Wiley and Hansford Jr. (or “Bud” the nick name Hansford Sr. gave him) were exposed to music from birth and would eventually go on to become incredible musicians in their own right, even performing with their father on a Teges Creek Trio reunion tour in the late 1980's. After their father was no longer able to perform due to age and moonshine addiction, Bud and Wiley continued writing and performing calling themselves SONS OF A SOONER.

While touring through Leesburg, FL in 2001, Bud & Wiley’s bus blew a tire and they stopped at the nearest auto shop which just so happened to be called Sooner’s Auto Garage. The robust and filthy man who ran the garage introduced himself as Sonny and bore a striking resemblance to the late Hansford Sr. Come to find out, he was one of Sr.’s children and was a drummer in a metal band called BITCHCYCLE.
The three brothers felt a bond that day and even talked about starting a country/rock band together. Months later, Sonny was fired from BITCHCYCLE for driving a ’69 Camaro into the guitar player’s living room and without hesitation caught a train to Kentucky to form a band with his brothers. The trio called themselves THE FRIGGIN’ SOONERS which they later shortened to simply… THE SOONERS.

Years later, while The Sooners were touring for their tri-county tour for the album Fistful of Love, they discovered a flyer advertising a wrestling match between the champ Buzzsaw Willy and a challenger known only as… The Mangler. After scoring ringside seats (they are The Sooners after all) and watching The Mangler dismantle Buzzsaw Willy they discovered the identity of the new champ was none other than Mansel Sooner… love child of Hansford Sr. and a one legged prostitute from Chicken Branch, KY. They soon discovered Mansel was a guitar player and even had one of their daddy’s original acoustic guitars. They knew it was meant to be.
Three was now four… and the face of music was never the same.

The Sooners’ popularity grew exponentially as more and more of Hansford Sr.’s children began to contact them and the family began to grow. Not surprisingly, most of the siblings were musically inclined and have performed with The Sooners on stage. Among them: Oscar Jack Sooner, Sissy Sooner, Sharon Sooner, Lloyd & Floyd (twins from Texas), and many more. If you or someone you know think that you might be a child of Hansford Sooner please contact the band right away.
