Bio
In the early to mid 1960's independent record labels such as Blue Note and Prestige Records were putting out scores of albums with a fresh new sound that crossed the boundaries between jazz and popular music, albums by artists such as Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Smith, Cannonball Adderley and Grant Green. This new sound became known as "soul jazz."
Soul jazz appealed to a wide spectrum of listeners by integrating elements of blues, hard bop, early rhythm and blues and gospel and later on became the most heavily sampled music by hip hop DJs because of its intensely funky and soulful grooves. What sets soul jazz apart from more commercial music is an unwillingness to compromise: long, exciting improvisations are the centerpiece of this style — wailing saxophones, singing trumpets, thundering bass!
The Soul Jazz Society is a collective of some of Canada's most exciting young musicians who share a passion for this unique musical movement. Watch out for SJS, coming to a jazz club near you.
