"Soundscapes | Music Hall Of Williamsburg | April 5, 2008"

The impressive thing isn’t just how tightly The Soundscapes play together, but how they seem to have boiled down their influences—think the whole range of early 90’s alt-rock and shoegaze—into something that can get pumped out through a duo without any loss of sound or intensity.

"Music Hall of Williamsburg"

The Soundscapes, a.k.a. Brazilian brothers Raphael and Rodrigo Carvalho, wear their Sonic Youth influences on their sleeves, they neatly recreated everything that was good and propulsive about the early nineties. It's safe to say that Brazil's loss is Brooklyn's gain.

"Brazil to Brooklyn Power Duo"

"Brazil to Brooklyn power duo The Soundscapes tore through an impressive set of tunes combining the angsty tension of early nineties college rock with punk guitar aggression. Highly recommended for fans of Local H and other dynamic indie duos". Nev Brown

"The Soundscapes at Make Music NY 6/21: The Wind and the Rain"

"The clouds cleared, the sun started to shine and The Soundscapes were playing in front of an out of business Chinese restaurant. Watching a couple of guys sweat and play their heart out right out in the street was magic. It made you remember why you listen, why you go to shows, why you bother standing outside hoping to score a spare ticket - it's all for the love".

THE SOUNDSCAPES
Debut Album Freestyle Family on BNS Sessions

There’s heaps of great music coming from Brooklyn right now and The Soundscapes are one prime example of that. The band – comprising of Brazilian brothers Rodrigo & Raphael Carvalho (guitars/vox and drums, respectively) - have been playing together and sharing bands for a long time now, developing a musical connection and an instinctive playing that was only enhanced by their sibling ties.

Born in the southern Brazilian city of Maringá, the Carvalho brothers then moved to São Paulo, where they were part of the burgeoning Brazilian underground. As time moved on, English graduate Raphael moved to Colorado, then London and backpacked through Europe, calling his brother one day to make plans to reunite in New York City.

And that’s exactly what they did. Arriving in 2003, they spent three years “absorbing the city and developing ideas,” before creating The Soundscapes in 2006. Before long, they would make a good mark on the New York scene, from playing at raw energetic loft parties to esteemed venues like The Bowery Ballroom and The Music Hall of Williamsburg to curating one showcase at the Make Music New York Festival in 2008, the duo has captured an enthusiastic audience and loyal fan-base.

Their debut album Freestyle Family was produced, recorded and mixed by John Davis at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn in the summer of 2008. The record is the result of all those years of playing and traveling. “To do Freestyle Family was very propelling and immediate to us. We wanted it to be a cohesive piece of work, one that would embody all the ideas we believe in. It’s all about the vibes”.

Freestyle Family will be released in February (US) and May (UK) of 2009 by Brooklyn label BNS Sessions with distribution in the USA through Carrot Top Records and in Europe with Cargo Records.

Quotes
“An adrenaline rush whose rhythmic pace never slackens but whose mood
changes from manic to restrained and back again so organically that it’s that kind of complexity that makes Freestyle Family’s gestalt more than the two band members involved in its creation”. - by David Smith / Adequacy.net

“It is The Soundscapes conscious
attention to strong melodies and pin-perfect drumming that fiercely drive each song”. – Gordon Sharp / Jezebel Music
