Bio

Combining deep and husky beats with unconventional samples, intertwining smooth, machine-gun raps with hypnotizing hooks and intergalactic vibes, The Spacetones create soundscapes that can easily appeal to lovers of many musical genres. Rooted in the college-town of Springfield, Missouri, the trio consists of MC Tahmipee, beatmeister Casey-Case, and cutmaster DJ Geeg. The three assemled in mid-2007 out of a mutual interest in underground hip-hop, '70s funk, and psychedelic jazz--styles which permeate each of their tracks, assembling a hybrid musical creature of eccentricity and perpetual groove.

The Spacetones released "Moon Tunes," their first proper LP, on July 26, 2008. The album was one of the first to be put out on LemonDrop Records, a fresh, locally-run label that harbors artists from all across the musical spectrum. To get an idea of what the album sounds like, take a handful of that smooth early-nineties hip-hop sound, mash it together with some fluctuating tempos, vintage synthesizers, and periodic episodes of stark eeriness, and then shoot the entire thing into space. The usual elements of hip-hop are certainly present--funky beats, fluid-like rhymes, and precise cuts--but The Spacetones add their own spin to things using obscure (and sometimes amusing) samples and extended instrumental breaks to create a different atmosphere than that of more straightforward hip-hop artists.

The Spacetones are accompanied at their live shows by Chuckmo, who controls the visual elements of the show, including hypnotic animations, familiar movie scenes, and other videos, all appropriately set to the songs in each show. The group wants to give the audience a truly memorable live experience: rather than watching a single guy behind a laptop and a stationary frontman playing one song after another, the audience can check out a four-piece musical act, complete with drum machines, samplers, turntables, and video. A Spacetones live show is consistently energetic, occasionally off-the-wall, and always groovy.
