"Retrospect – Always (Music Video)"

After dropping their first single and posse cut “CAN I” with the hilarious mini movie tribute slash music video — a la Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing — Retrospect is back at it again releasing the visuals for their second single “Always” off The Breakout. Directed by Def Poet also known to artistically inclined as Adebowale Adesuyi, “Always” takes us through the motions of life, I suppose… in the greatest city during the summer seasons hands down. What more could you ask for; a dope track with a melody, some P.Y.T’s and summertime chi wrapped up in a six minute short that will definitely be playing on repeat in your head… always!.

If you haven’t yet picked up The Breakout, head on over to TheSpect.net for everything Retrospect and so much more. - IMF Magazine

"IMF Exclusive Video Premier: Retrospect – We Came Last"

The year of The Spect is definitely insight over the horizon and the foundation has been firmly set. Anticipation for The Breakout is at its highest and the team is steady growing strong. After premiering last week live at Linkin House, IMF is proud to present to the world, Retrospect’s latest video “We Came Last”.

What’s a party without the homies right? Well no worries because we’re all here and in the mix is a handful of those sexy PYTs doing what they do best. Directed by Sol Films, the video feature cameos by theWHOevers, Chandler London, The Highest Low, Brandknew and a few other ‘presidential’ members of the team.

Is there any question still, as to who’s on their team? Well, the answers are all here, here and here. Be on the look out for a new Quotes and Def Poet mixtape in the coming weeks, then soon after The Breakout will be upon us. So head on over, if you haven’t already, and like their Facebook to stay in the know with everything Retrospect. More info on the track after the break. - IMF Magazine

"Retrospect: “We Came Last” (prod by BrandUn Deshay)"

Retrospect get a little funky with the auto-tune on “We Came Last”, a new joint produced by BrandUn Deshay. This differs quite a bit from the last song of theirs that I posted on the site, but you may dig it just as much. Lots of pontificating on the game on this one. Check it below. - Ruby Hornet

"[Video] RETROSPECT: “Always”"

Summertime Chi is a wonderful thing – the weather is gorgeous, there are street festivals practically every weekend, rooftop parties highlight every evening, the homies are always around, and girls, girls, girls. Directed by Def Poet/Adebowale Adesuyi, RETROSPECT’s latest video from their amazing mixtape The Breakout: Part One is finally public after a private viewing party a couple of weeks ago. ”Always” captures what makes Chicago summers so amazing, complete with all of the aforementioned shenanigans (shouts out to ShowYouSuck and Auggie the 9th) with some other summer staples, including Emporium, the beach, and a nighttime carnival.

Debo’s music videos always follow a light narrative to frame the music like a short film, and he’s honestly one of my favorite music video directors in Chicago right now. Besides the obvious stuff, like shooting the song’s theme via a “Day in the Life” of RETROSPECT’s circle, there’s a cool parallel between the video’s intro focused on Quotes (I’m digging the PI flag in the corner) to Def Poet’s mirrored ending. It’s always the little things that separate us.

Check out the video for “Always” below, download The Breakout: Part One if you haven’t already, and check out RETROSPECT’s brand new website.

"Retrospect - Always (Official Music Video)"

Directed By Adebowale Adesuyi

Quotes and Def Poet of Retrospect revisit some nicer days spent in Chicago this summer for their new video and short film. Def Poet aka Adebowale is quite the filmmaker and the sole director of Retropect's visuals thus far, so if you enjoy them, make sure to tell him so. You can catch "Always" on the duo's recently released "The Breakout: Part One" EP. - Go ILL

"Retrospect - We Came Last (Official Music Video)"

Directed By Sol Films

This Chicago duo hit my radar with their last single featuring ShowYouSuck, the remix to "Abella". "We Came Last" is the first official single from their forthcoming EP "The Breakout". These guys make it look like they've been doing it for a while, but where did they come from?! I'm sold, you better get educated too, Retrospect is dope. - Go ILL

"New Album: Retrospect – The Breakout Part One"

Chicago rap duo, Retrospect, drop the first part of their two part LP, The Breakout today. No word on when the second half is due out, but you shouldn’t concern yourself with that at the moment. Just take some time to ingest and digest the first edition, which was mixed, mastered and recorded at Classick Studios.

Stream/listen below… - Fake Shore Drive

"[Video] RETROSPECT: “The Breakout”"

Have you seen RETROSPECT’s video for “Can I“? My favorite local video of the year dropped while I was at SXSW, yet it was practically all I could talk about while I was hanging out with Quotes and Def Poet. Debo’s cut from a multitalented cloth, most recently displayed with the Chicago duo’s latest video for “The Breakout.” The video is a montage of clips from Akira edited together by Debo into a fluid AMV that complements the song’s thematic notions… just exaggerated alongside a post-apocalyptic anime world full of drugs, gangs, and telekinetic superbeings.

The video also doubles as a peek into RETROSPECT’s next project, a two-part LP with the first half, the aptly titled The Breakout: Part One, set to drop on August 12th. A listening party for the release will be held at Jugrnaut (427 S. Dearborn) on August 11th from 5pm – 7pm. There’s also a release show scheduled for August 15th at Elbo Room. As if RETROSPECT haven’t already, it seems like Quotes and Def Poet are taking that next step to ensure they do, in fact, “break out.” - Ruby Hornet

"[Video] Retrospect: “Can I” (feat. Chandler London, J Arthur, Dot Kom & ShowYouSuck)"

Chicago’s own, Retrospect, initially came under my radar due to their impressive videos for the songs “Abella” & “We Came Last”, thanks two both being visually appealing and very welcoming of their sound and style. Nonetheless, yesterday the duo set their standards even higher with the release of the short-film for their local posse-cut “Can I”, which features Chandler London, J Arthur, DotKom & ShowYouSuck. Inspired by Spike Lee’s classic Do The Right Thing, this is by far the most entertaining video Quotes and Def Poet have put out and also one of the best video’s in 2013. Auggie The 9th’s cameo as the protagonist only adds to the epicness. Directed by Adebowale Adesuyi. - Ruby Hornet

"[Mixtape] RETROSPECT: “The Breakout Pt.1?"

Last night, RETROSPECT successfully hosted a listening party for their latest project, The Breakout Pt.1, and today Quotes & Def Poet have finally put out the first installment from The Breakout series for the masses to enjoy. Alluding to their name, the Chicago duo is known to deliver a sound that mixes a throwback-style reminiscent of mid-90's Hip-Hop and a refreshing new vibe that’s homogeneous to early-Kanye West material. The Breakout Pt.1 is the epitome of their sound at its best, making it highly enjoyable for their long-time fans and it’s only seven-tracks deep which makes it a smooth listen that will not overwhelm new listeners. Features and production by brandUn DeShay, classik Chandler London, J Arthur, DotKom & ShowYouSuck add an extra incentive to not miss out on this ‘tape. Stream below and stay tuned for part two. - Ruby Hornet

Chicago duo Retrospect debuts the title track for their forthcoming project via this Akira montage. The first of Retrospects two part LP is due out August 12th, and let me just tell you that it has potential to change the way many think of hip hop. I've had the project for a few weeks now, and its a promising look at this group's future. Some real keepers on this project, you won't want to skip a track. "Retrospect - The Breakout (Part One) (Mixtape)"

If you missed the sneak peek yesterday at Jugrnaut, have no worries, Quotes and Def Poet didn't keep their fans waiting very long. Today Retrospect drops their first of a two part EP series. I've been trying to put people on to these guys for a while, and one listen to this tape will have you hooked for good. Retrospect is putting in the effort, and it shows. Don't sleep any longer, the EP is 7 tracks deep, and I assure you that you can lose the skip button. - Go ILL

"Retrospect x theWHOevers x Chandler London x ShowYouSuck - Can I (Trailer)"

Quotes and Def Poet make up Chicago duo Retrospect and they are emcees you need to be on the lookout this year. These two have been rapping together for a while now, but I didn't start paying close attention until their single "Abella" was remixed with ShowYouSuck. It's just the beginning for these guys, but their dope brand of rhymes and harmonies are sure to gain attention quickly once people start listening.

The clip up top is a very quick preview of what you can expect from their next single. ShowYouSuck makes another guest appearance, but this time he's joined by the Chandler London and theWHOevers. Listening to 40 seconds of this beat, and I can already tell this is going to be a f*ckin' problem! Catch an advanced screening of the video at Linkin House March 8th, or right here when it makes its online debut March 12th. - Go ILL

Wow, slept on this gem! This is the first i'm hearing of Chicago duo Retrospect, but you can bet I do my homework on these guys. For the remix to this "feel good" record, they link up with ShowYouSuck for a great track and visual. You very rarely hear Show on an upbeat track like this, not a bad look at all though. - Go ILL

"MF Exclusive Video Premier: Retrospect feat. ShowYouSuck – Abella (Remix)"

Back in April we changed your perspective on Chicago’s hip hop scene as we sat down with Def Poet and Quotes of Retrospect. A few months have past and just like a vintage record, the sounds have only gotten better. This time around what we have for the good people at IMF is the exclusive video world premier of the “Abella (remix)” featuring none another than Chicago’s own #OneManPizzaParty, ShowYouSuck.

Kick back and check the fresh as director Chris Yankton, who also directed the groups original “Abella” video, takes us on a behind the scenes photo-shoot-esque visual treatment for this remix. Changing up the eye candy from the original “Abella” video, Elisa plays up the role with ease, style and that ‘I Used to Love H.E.R.’ finesse.

The candids, in black and white, offer up a picture that we aren’t to familiar with in the money/chase/hoes Hip-Hop-video-format from the likes of WorldstarHipHop. What more can I say, that I haven’t already. This remix elevates and make its smooth like butter. Hit the break to see what info Def Poet lets loose on The Breakout EP, some upcoming videos, a new single coming, and of course a free download of the “Abella (Remix)”.

The music video for “We Came Last” is dropping in December… and the upcoming EP “The Breakout” is dropping early next year. Also, look out for another single dropping early next year featuring ShowYouSuck, Chandler London and theWHOevers.

"Retrospect Live @ The Tonic Room (Video)"

Last week we got invited to Retrospect’s live performance at The Tonic Room where we got to chop it up with the guys, enjoy the rhymes with a handful of fine women and find out some updates on their upcoming shows and releases. When we last caught up with the duo of Def Poet and Quotes they were premiering their first single “We Came Last” off their yet to be released The Breakout mixtape on IMFmag.com. And now two months later all in attendance at the Tonic Room where signing right a long word for word. I’m sure it’s a dope feeling when what you create gets so much love, and it couldn’t happened to a more humble group.

After blessing the stage with a set that covered a handful of The Spect’s freshest cuts (the ever potent “B-Side”, the girl dedicated “Abella“, and their latest single “We Came Last“) Retrospect headed outside for a much needed breath of fresh air and that’s where I caught up with everything Retrospect. So hit the break to find out why this year is the year of the Spect!

Retrospect has been paying it’s dues and the come up has been moving at a rapid pace from when we first introduced you to them back in April. After they released their Retro1 EP and the video for “Abella” Retrospect has been making quite a bit of noise in the city of wind, and Quotes let me know that fellow Chicago emcee and former member of the Black Eye Peas ShowYouSuck had dropped a wild verse for the remix to “Abella” the other day, which should be dropping soon accompanied by a brand new visual directed by Christopher Yankton.

Also in the works, the group has a brand new visual for “We Came Last” directed by Sol Films featuring cameos by The WHOevers, Chandler London and a few other special guests. And of course the much anticipated Breakout tape will be dropping soon. If that wasn’t enough to wet your hip hop whistle and get you excited, Quotes also added some big news about their next show;

For our next show we’re opening up for MGK and Kid Ink at the Congress Theater. October 30th. Tickets are $35. Email retrospectsoundsgood@gmail.com to get tickets 30% off

So hit them up ASAP and spread love. #WHOSONMYTEAM

"IMF EXCLUSIVE PREMIER: RETROSPECT – WE CAME LAST"

It’s always a good day when good music is on display, and here at IMF we always keep it fresh with new and exclusive material for the people. This time around we got something special for the audio hungry masses, an exclusive premier of Retrospect’s latest single “We Came Last” off their upcoming EP The Breakout. Keeping it within the city, The Spect reached out to another Chicagoan, Brandun Deshay to produce “We Came Last”. When we last caught up with Retrospect back in April, the group had just released their “Abella” video off of their collaborative Retro 1 EP with Pak.One and they were all excited telling me about this single [We Came Last].

Quotes: just wait till the next cd, he [Brandun Deshay] got our… maybe our first single, maybe. on the next cd, its going to be a banger

And trust thats what it is, a banger. Stepping into a new territory of sound for the group, Retrospect has definitely found its voice with “We Came Last” as they built on what “Abella” capitalized on; melody, lyrics and a feel good sound that everyone could rock to. Especially the ladies. Its infectious melody will be with you long after the track is over. So fella’s hold tight to you ladies as Retrospect hits the city of wind with their own flavor of hip hop. Hit the break for a download, the single artwork and where to catch the next Retrospect show. So I got one question, #WhosOnMyTeam? - IMF Magazine

"Retrospect: We Came Last"

Chicago hip-hop/soul duo Retrospect, who previously made some noise behind the visuals for “Abella“, link up with producer Brandun DeShay for their super smooth new single “We Came Last”. The track premiered over at IMF Mag, who provided some nice custom artwork along with the insight that this song is set to appear on an upcoming EP entitled The Breakout. Give this one a few spins and let us know what you think. - SBG Movement

"Retrospect: “Ripple”"

Chicago based emcees Quotes and Def Poet make up the crew, RETROSPECT. As their name suggests, these two draw inspiration from Hip Hop’s past, mainly artists such as A Tribe Called Quest and Black Star. Today they give us their new single, “Ripple”, made with Pak One. Listen to the new record and download it below. - Ruby Hornet

"Retrospect Interview with Gowhere Hip Hop"

Last week, one of the performances for GWHH & Marcus Shadden‘s GO! Fridays at Lasalle Power Co. included Chicago hip hop duo, Retrospect.

You may have seen them from some of our previous posts, but in case you haven’t – here is your chance to find out everything about them both musically and personally.

Check out the interview where I get the inside scoop of what brought them to the decision of becoming a hip hop duo, what to expect from their upcoming project, which includes Retro 1, and what makes them different from the other artists in Chicago.

Following music discussions, I took the interview to a different route, where we talked about what they like and dislike about their city, and what hobbies they enjoy doing outside of creating music. - Gowhere Hip Hop

"RETROSPECT “ABELLA” (PROD. PAK.ONE) [MUSIC VIDEO]"

Check out fresh Chicago duo Retrospect with their new song and visual for “Abella”, produced by M.L.A.’s pak.one. Quotes & Def Poet make up Retrospect as they both rhyme and sing throughout this feel-good record dedicated to the ladies. There’s a couple of situations going on here: one already has the sweet girl, one is trying to woo one in but gets rejected. As such, you may find something to relate to here. The visuals are nice and feature a few good-looking leading ladies to represent the subjects of the rhymes and harmonizing. Lastly, my man pak.one does it again on the production – this time with a little old-school jazz element added to the sound. Pretty nice overall so press play above! - GoWhere HipHop

"IMF EXCLUSIVE: A NEW PERSPECTIVE WITH RETROSPECT (INTERVIEW)"

Here at IMFmag.com we are always exposing you to the latest and greatest in Hip Hop and beyond. In doing so we come across loads of old and new talent everyday. We sift through the nonsense and drop the knowledge on our readers on the daily, making sure they get a quality experience minus all the hype. The problem is, Hip Hop as a culture is huge and people get stuck in their lanes, comfortable and rarely venture out into the vast world of the up and coming. It could be due in part to the here today gone tomorrow fly by night pace of the internet or the vast amount of horrible shit being put out there. But, whatever be the case I’m here to introduce a group that might have found “that feeling” that’s been missing in mainstream hip hop for so long.

Comprised of two emcees, Quotes and Def Poet, Retrospect is as new and rejuvenating as the time. Using the formula of extracting from the legendary artists of music history to create new and compelling music for the future. Retrospect’s music has been described as soulful, classic, and unheard of. Hailing from inspirations such as A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West and Common, Retrospect makes thought provoking music exciting and brand new. Last week I got to chill and laugh it up with the group and pick their brains on their new projects, superheroes, stereotypes, influences and their latest single/video Abella. Hit the break for the full interview and their latest music video.

After hitting the stage with the likes of Theophilus London and Pac Div, being featured on WGCI’s Go Ill Radio, in and out of Chicago publications like Timeout Chicago and the Chicago Reader, as well as performing for the TNK 2012 Winter Festival, Retrospect is definitely doing big things. If you’re still not familiar then you should take this as a brief introduction of how nice these Chicago Emcees are.

IMF: Let everyone know your names and the meanings behind them?
Q: My name is Quotes.
DP: I’m Def Poet.
Q: Well Quotes like… since back in the day since high school you know I used to write down quotes and stuff all the time and eventually… it just stuck with me. I was just Quotes.
DP: When I came up with my name it was during the time when WE [pointing to Quotes] first started.
Q: Yeah
DP: And I was really trying to figure out like… What makes good hip hop music? Because you know, that’s like the ONE thing. And I feel like I did. We were watching Def Poetry Jam…
Q: You still got my DVDs man. [laughs]
DP: Yeah, yeah I still got those at the crib too.
Q: [laughs]
DP: And I think I found that thing that makes hip hop/rap sickest. It’s poetry. And what makes poetry good is how well the poet can communicate the emotion he intends to provoke from his audience. whether that emotion be excitement, anger, sorrow or if he wants you to feel like you got swag its the same with Hip Hop. If you put it that way, then its easier to say, yeah ok. That dope. That’s why I named myself Def Poet.

IMF: Did you have another alias before you were Quotes/Def Poet?
DP: You know what? We were thinking bout that and I can’t remember what we thought about. But that [Def Poet] was the first official one.
Q: Yeah [laughs]
DP: But I know he had one [pointing to Quotes and laughing]
Q: What was it, what was it!? Naw. I remember I had one that I used to write with a couple of other friends and that’s how it started but…
DP: It was, Rap-si-dize!
Q: Oh! It was Rapsidize [laughs] It was that, yeah! I don’t know where that name came from. I think I hung around the dictionary a little too much [laughs]
DP: [laughs]
Q: I don’t know where that came from. So yeah that’s what it was. But now I’m Quotes!
DP: [laughs]
Q: You were like [pointing to Def Poet] “That’s pretty whack” and then I was like “alright cool”.

IMF: So how long have you guys been together as a group?
Q: Maybe like four years, yeah I think four years.
DP: Yeah
Q: But then there was like a crazy hiatus and stuff. You know just about growing up and - IMF Magazine

Bio

Of the few phases of one of the youngest genres of music, there hasn't been a time that has been defined with as much confusion and uncertainty as what surrounds hip hop today. It is times like these that see the most anger and frustration but spawn the most innovative and fearless minds. It is a time of both ambiguity and excitement for new horizon. Out of the vacuum of creativity and yearning for new frontier Retrospect is born. Comprised of two emcees, Quotes and Def Poet, Retrospect is as new and rejuvenating as the time. Using the formula of extracting from the legendary artists of music history to create new and compelling music for the future, Retrospect has effectively succeeded in what they set out to accomplish: to create the essence that is lacking in the bombardment of music today. Propelled by their phrase, "remember that feeling," Retrospect brings the organic feeling and emotion that used to be so prevalent in not only the history of hip hop but all genres, and injects that into sonic horizons of today.

Retrospect's music has been described as soulful and melodic. Hailing from inspirations such as A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West and Blackstar, Retrospect makes thought provoking music exciting and brand new; simply by summoning the power of the imagination.

Retrospect has performed in various venues and clubs in the Chicagoland area such as Funky Buhdda, Kinetic Playground, Red Kiva, Wildhare, Tonic Room, Subterranean and Lincoln Hall for the TNK 2012 Winter Festival / Tour de Roses. They have performed at events varying from music showcases in colleges to the annual nationwide Dunk Exchange and have shared the stage with artists such as PAC DIV and Theophilus London. In March 2013, they performed at Shiner's Saloon for SXSW. Retrospect has been featured on DePaul Radio, WGCI's Go Ill Radio, Soul Call Radio in Spain, Timeout Chicago, The Chicago Reader, IMF Magazine, Fake Shore Drive, Ruby Hornet, GO ILL, and Pursuit of Dopeness.

Retrospect's most current project is The Breakout: Part One, which is rapidly germinating buzz throughout the Chicagoland area and can be downloaded for free at: thespect.net.
