"Shows That Rocked Toronto Last Week"

They play a loose, punked-up version of old R&B, but the star is singer Siânteuse (formerly of the Bang Bangs). Her bluesy wail is too huge and rich for punk rock, but we’re not complaining. Not only can she belt it out, but she can also handle herself in front of a crowd.

Bio

The Sphinxs rose from the ashes of 5 piece garage outfit The Bang Bangs in the summer of 2010. The sonic wave that is their massive, furious and above all unique sound has truly shaken Toronto and will no doubt bring your town to its knees.

Described as "a force to be reckoned with" and "sex incarnate," The Sphinxs are nothing short of an aural hurricane, with a stage presence to match. Their sound blends soul-rooted vocals, punky crunch, R&B guitars and swirling organ textures with a light shot of psychedelia. The Sphinxs have shared bills with with some of the biggest names in garage in their young career including Mark Sultan, Davila 666, The Spits, Red Mass, Bloodshot Bill, The Party Stompers, Gardens, and many more, at some of the best rock venues in the city, like the Silver Dollar, Parts & Labour and up-and-coming venue The Piston. Looking to capitalize on their buzz and live success, The Sphinxs released their first record, a 12” split with friends and tour mates Miesha & The Spanks, on October 15th. Consisting of three songs recorded in 2011, the record charted highly on national campus radio after its release, peaking at number 40 on the national top 50 charts for November. Always looking forward, the band will be heading back into the studio in March to record a follow up to their well-received debut, which should carry the band's momentum well into 2012.
