Bio

History has know many famous spies: Nathan Hale, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Giacomo Casanova , Mati Hari, Aldrich Ames, Benedict Arnold. In the industry, these people are of course regarded as disgrace to their profession, the bottom of the barrel, the anti-phantom. The exposed. If the world knows youre a spy, how good of a spy are you?

Enter The Spies, a band that has had to struggle to expose the world to their music without exposing themselves to the world. Little is known of the true origin of the band though it is generally acknowledged that they formed somewhere in the NE Corridor in late 2004, brought together by a common disregard for popular music and Pierce Brosnan. Each member used what they were taught by their respective mentors to create a sound that Timeout NY called "a big sound for a small band, with breathy, anthemic songs." and the Head of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff called a threat to this nation and The Pussycat Dolls.

They are true masters of their craft relying on shadows and snare drums, booby traps and bass lines. They lurk at the edges of perception; antagonizing their prey with the self imposed paranoia that comes with the knowledge that you may be under surveillance. They have been known to cause listeners to uncontrollably move their feet and sing along to their sonic weaponry. Once they do, they cant seem to stop, losing all control and memory of what supposedly good music is supposed to sound like.

Their sound is sometimes dark, debonair and danceable while at other times haunting and plaintive. Songs like Ruby tells the story of Jack Rubys murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, while tracks like Liberated Matter capture the struggle of a displaced spy in a foreign land. Some would call their melodic messages propaganda while others would call it rock and roll.

The Spies have been known to cavort with several acclaimed performers who make guest appearances on their recordings in hopes to learn the secrets of the group. Among them are Russell Simins of Blues Explosion, Chantal Claret of Morningwood and Andy Ross of OK GO. The latter two can be heard on The Spies track Domino and have since become aficionados in using lasers. Yet, these people too seem to have few answers when pressed on the detail of the bands identity and for good reason keep their mouth shut.

In their brief history, many others have tried to expose The Spies, among them Yahoo, NYC-TVs NY Noise and various websites such as www.15megsoffame.com where the bands single Domino was voted ..1 out of thousands of songs by listeners for 8 weeks straight. Yet will The Spies every be fully and truly exposed? And if so, by whom? Only time will tell. Perhaps it will be you.
