Quirky, indie popsters The Steeples deliver the kinda pop music that only us Brits can manage; think Libertines meet Supergrass and you'll be getting somewhere close to The Steeples infectious way.

'Britney's Tears' and 'b' sides 'Tight Tina' and 'Brown Eyes' by Ormskirk's The Steeples is foot-tappin' pop at its catchiest and most blatant best. Hooky guitar riffs slink through simplistically delivered bass and drums and allow the carefree Russ Mael-(Sparks)-esque vocals to skip belligerently atop the happy 'chunes'. The Steeples have a cheeky style but just occasionally they show a well honed punk-edged sharpness that's refreshing and annoyingly bloody catchy.

The three songs offered here clearly show The Steeples' playful and energetic nature and you almost can't help liking their mischievous sounding approach. Quirky maybe but, The Steeples are unashamedly setting their sights on pop stardom rather than indie drudgery. And, if these songs are typical of their output I can see The Steeples making a big impression some time very soon. Certainly, the 'pop' charts are desperate for new 'blood' and The Steeples could be just the donor required.

'Britney's Tears' by The Steeples is Brit-pop at its irritatingly infectious best - there aren't many bands out there that can make you smile with their music alone. Then, if you listen to their lyrics you quickly realise that this clever bunch of scallies write with mature wit - they're dry, poignant, ironic and charmingly poetic - clever stuff from The Steeples - must do well!!

Contrary to the title’s obvious connections, The Steeples’ single isn’t about the recent goings on of a certain well documented pop star. Written before the recent media frenzy relating to ‘Britney’ the song pokes fun at lads who join bands just for the sex, drugs and rock n roll and neglect the most important thing – the music! And The Steeples’ love and talent for music and songwriting is certainly evident in their debut single. With poignant yet quirky lyrics combined with their sweat-filled, hi octane live sets, they sound like The Kinks, The Fratellis and T-Rex all rolled into one super band. If you're going to listen to one new band this year, make sure it's The Steeples. Of the millions of bands that add you on myspace, finding a good band is like finding a needle in a haystack and I've absolutely found that needle with The Steeples. To an unseasoned pair of ears, their songs may sound like new tracks by The Kooks but if you listen carefully you can hear the difference and also find that their songs might be better. Their influences couldn't be more apparent and they're able to realize that the current music scene is actually a good one so why fix something that isn't broken?

I haven't been this excited about a new band since Franz Ferdinand crossed the Atlantic over three years ago and won the hearts of the NY indie. All their songs (well, the four you can hear on their myspace) are absolutely infectious and leave you aching for more. The most standout track to me is "Alley Girl" but the song that showcases the lead singer's vocal abilities the best is the song "Bus Stop." I can't tell you what their debut album will be called, and I bet they can't either, but there are plans for it to be released later on this year and I'm sure it'll be a contender for album of the year. The hotly tipped indie band, The Steeples, embark on their first UK tour, from the end of January until the 1st March 2008.

They were one of the latest bands to land Xfm’s single of the week in January 2008 with the hit song “Britney’s Tears” and are taking their fresh music on a tour.

Their influences include modern indie bands, but they separate themselves with twanging dance floor-beckoning guitars and vocal delivery.

The gigs will kick off in Accrington and visit a number of places from London to Edinburgh.

Liverpool chaps Andy Culshaw, Dan Rankin, Chris 'Hutchy' Hutchinson and Alex Caskie- form The Steeples and have already received critical acclaim for their tunes.

“They have what it takes to be the future NME cover darlings. If you’re going to listen to one new band this year, make sure it’s the Steeples,” says Nylon Magazine.

They like the Beach Boys and holidaying in the South of France with the family, last threw up due to a bad carbonara and one of them used to be a postman. Oh, and their favourite drink is a nice cup of tea. You don’t get much more rock 'n roll than that.

New Liverpool indie band The Steeples are quickly rocketing to the top, with their new single Britney’s Tears already getting major interest – it’s already been XFM’s single of the week. They’ve also already played Oxjam events alongside the likes of The Bluetones, The Wedding Present, The Thrills and Rumblestrips, and they’ve only been together for 18 months! We spoke to vocalist Andy Culshaw and guitar player Dan Rankin.

How did you get started?

Andy: Me and Dan started writing songs together about 18 months ago and it became pretty productive quite quickly, before long we'd written about 10 songs and we picked up the other boys along the way and started gigging.

Danny: Yeah, we spotted Alex [the drummer] playing with another band but they were bad so we stole him and he was mates with Hutchy and got him on board.

How would you describe your style?

Andy: I think indie pop covers it, very contemporary sounding. We just try to write good tunes. We've got influences from like the Beach Boys and The Kinks, so quite melodic happy feel-good tunes.

What was the best ever gig you have played to date?

Danny: I think the first gig we did together was one of my favourites cos it was in our home town and it was a great atmosphere. Scottish gigs are always a treat too cos they go nuts up there.

Andy: Yeah Glasgow, The Capitol bar, because they love getting involved and having a good night in there.

What was your best gig or band that you have seen as a gig-goer?

Andy: Mine was the first ever gig I went to, it was Marrillion at Manchester academy and it was the first time I'd ever seen a band live. I was only 15 and I just loved live music from then on.

Danny: I'm a fan of the Bluetones. The first time I saw them was at Liverpool Barfly a few years ago and it was wicked. That or Ocean Colour Scene late last year was amazing. Steve Cradock is a big hero of mine, great guitarist.

What are currently your favourite bands?

Andy: We're quite into the View right now, they write great melodies. I really like this band called Thomas Tantrum, the girl’s got an amazing voice.

Danny: Dundee's a good place for music right now, there's band called The Law who are fantastic, so much energy live.

Tell us something you think people won’t know about you?

Andy: I used to be a postman!

Danny: Andy thinks he's an absolute tactical genius at footy.

Andy: Yeah, I'm a proper geek really, I'm into history and theology and stuff like that.

Who is your all time favourite act?

Danny: There's too many good acts really.

Andy: Bob Dylan

Danny: Well I think there are. Maybe OCS?


Are there any acts you love to hate?

Danny: Klaxons. How the hell can they win a mercury music prize? I'm not saying we should but they don't write very good songs.

Andy: The Osmonds, purely cos my mum played them through my entire childhood, if I hear puppy love one more time I'll scream!

What was your first job?

Danny: I worked on a market stall with this fella from Bolton selling towels and bed linen.

Andy: Working behind the bar in a local shit-hole pub.

When was the last time you threw up?

Andy: New Years Eve, I was ill.

Danny: No, you had a cold and sulked all night. I got food poisoning the other night. Carbonara, not good!

What's your pre-gig drink of choice?

Andy: Gin and juice, tea if my throat’s sore.

Danny: Yeah we drink a lot of tea. Nothing like a good brew.

Do you do the whole groupie love thing?

Danny: Andy thinks he does.

Andy: No, we leave that to the drummer. He's got no standards, he'll take anything!

Which other celebrity would you like to be trapped in a lift with?

Andy: Hutchy from the Steeples, I quite like him!

Liverpool and the north west have been littering the charts with successful bands for years, recognised as the UK's highest producer of number one hits, it's of little surprise that quirky indie newcomers The Steeples are hotly tipped to come good in 2008. With huge success already having been achieved with tracks 'On The Run', 'Fallin Down' and XFM single of the week 'Loosy Lucy', new single 'Britney's Tears' with it's quirky, upbeat melody and singable song lyrics beckons the same warm reception. In some ways a track that deserves a genre all of it's own, here Beatles Brit-pop is pulled into contact with the hyperactive, comical pop of The Hoosiers and XTC with a little Chas & Dave thrown in for good measure. A sure fire hit!

HINTS OF TWENTIES VAUDEVILLE AND SIXTIES CHIC pervades The Steeples' new single release, Britney's Tears. Think Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and you'll get the picture.

The Steeples bring their own talents into play and blatantly have a lot of fun doing so. Hotly tipped for the top, this indie band from Ormskirk near Liverpool is signed to Easy Money Records (www.easymoney
records.co.uk) and have a quirkiness that few bands can convincingly convey. Hailing from the city recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as having the most Number One hits in any country in the world, it's easy to see that this band of merry scallywags has clearly inherited Liverpool's hit-making virus — it's all in the genes.

With poignant, quirky lyrics combined with their "sweat-filled, hi-
octane live sets, they have already garnered themselves an enviable reputation and a hardcore following of self-styled Steeple People,"
says the publicity machine.

"Picture a hot bubbling cauldron full of skinny jeans, pretty boys, floppy fringes, ska-tinged guitars, infectious indie pop riffs; throw in a young Brian Wilson and stir with the Libertines, and you'll start to get the idea of The Steeples' sound.

"They unashamedly state their influences as 'modern indie bands' but separate themselves from the chaff with twanging dancefloor-beckoning guitars and vocal delivery that leaves you with no choice but to grin and join in."

And join in you do. The foolish grin plastered all over your face is one consequence of listening to The Steeples. Their catchy uproar has already reached the ears of a number of tastemakers and a few advertisers — On The Run and Fallin' Down have been used as part of an NHS anti-smoking ad.

The Killers' management spokesman said The Steeples' Loosy Lucy was "the most commercial record I've heard in the last three years." Already befitting a Noughties classic, LoosyLucy was a recent MFM single of the week and the single Britney's Tears is set to follow suit. Trans-Atlantic tastemaker magazine, Nylon — who supported the likes of Hard Fi and Editors early on — is already a great early advocator of The Steeples.

Earlier this year the band was invited to play Liverpool and Blackburn's Oxjam events alongside other glitterati including The Bluetones, The Wedding Present, The Thrills and Rumblestrips. Early 2008 will see the foursome embark on their first nationwide tour, taking in all the UK's major cities, unleashing their brand of upfront indie-pop to their army of fans — many of whom have yet to see this fresh and exciting band perform live.



Individual members of the band have experienced success on previous projects playing at Glastonbury Festival, in the USA and touring with Sandi Thom. Manager Tony Newbury worked for Universal for 22 years and was involved in the careers of The Charlatans, The Farm and many more.
