lead by La Morris Payne aka
(LA SKY) the splendid
trumpeter and vocalist worked
for many years with Rick James
and Motown Record to include
tours and studio work. They
were so instrumental in Rick
James career that he deemed
them their own identity, The
Rick James Stone City Band.
The band touring the world for
years gained a reputation for
being one of the most
sensational bands ever. Only
bands that challenged their sensational horn section were, Tower of Power and Brass
Construction.
Their horn section and power packed licks were all arranged by their musical director La Morris
Payne.
The band plays all of Rick James Hits on all of his Platinum, Gold and hit albums to include:
Urban Rhapsody, Bustin’ Out Of Seven, Street Songs, Come Get It, Cool Blooded, Wonderful,
Kickin, Glow, Throwin’ Down, Fire It Up, Garden Of Love and The Flag.

Bio's of The Stone City Band

LA Sky, Band Leader, Bio

LA Sky (aka LaMorris Payne) Leader, trumpet, vocals.

LA holds an established career in the music industry. His close musical relationship of nearly twenty five years with Rick James as a member of the Stone City Band and his professional recordings under the labels of Warner Brothers records and Motown has brought deserved notoriety to the name LaMorris Payne.
LaMorris has recorded and/or performed with several multi-million selling artists such as: Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, Eddie Murphy, Teena Marie, The Mary-Jane Girls and of course the king of funk Rick James, and many more.
Now known as LA Sky, he is the leader of the Rick James Stone City Band, dedicated to respectfully maintain the memory of Rick James and keep the love of the music of our beloved brother alive.
LaMorris Payne, aka L.A.Sky credits include recording on Warner Bros., and Motown labels, with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, Eddie Murphy, Teena Marie, The Mary Jane Girls and the King of Funk, Rick James. Dirk Dennis.

Ricky J. is Roscoe Craft, Bio

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, his musical background mostly consists of performances as a sound engineer with groups such as: Midnight Starr, The Deal and other with groups with the Midnight Starr production company.
He captures the persona of the late Rick James and keeps him alive on stage. This is a big contribution of the band’s goal to keep the funk alive!!!

Derek Dennis, Bio

Born in Atlanta GA in 1961 and moved to Dayton, Ohio when he was 5 years old. He grew up listening to artist such as Al Green, Sly and the Family Stone, Kool and the Gang, and Ohio Players. He began his music career by first playing the lead guitar. He then moved on to play the bass guitar at the age of 15. He began honing his skill by playing with local bands in the Dayton area. He also did studio recordings with various members of the Ohio Players, Slave, and Sun. Dirk was then asked to play bass professionally with the group Slave between 1995 – 2008. During this time he shared the stage with artist’s such as Morris Day and the Time, Bootsy’s Rubberband, Ready for the World, Confunkshun, Barkays, Cameo, SOS Band and the Brother’s Johnson to name a few.
By collaborating and networking with different musicians, Dirk made a connection with Lamorris Payne aka LA Sky of the Rick James Stone City Band. LA asked Dirk to play bass with the group in April of 2010. Dirk has been playing, recording, touring, and laying down the funk with the band every since.

Dolly King, Bio

A singer whose vocal style reflects her passion for singing from the soul, Dolly began singing at the very young age of 7. Her gospel foundation has always kept her grounded and focused, allowing her to develop her God-given talent that she has shared with people all over the world. Her singing career began with her mother, Ms. Deborah King, a choir directress. She continued her gospel music by forming her first professional group, Subtle Blackness, with Ms. Tabitha Porter, followed by the Joe Mitchell Gospel and Recording Group, and the gospel group Chosen.

Vicki Saunders, Bio

Vicki Saunders was invited to join the Rick James Stone City Band in 2009. She has been dancing and singing since a young girl who was born and raised in Wooster, Ohio. She graduated from Wooster High School and relocated to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University. She received her B.A. in Journalism and while at OSU became very involved in theatre and dance from ballet to African. She has performed in numerous community theatre musicals, music festivals, weddings, many live bands, special events at the Palace Theatre, Lincoln Theatre and King Arts Complex and local nightclub venues: toured Europe as a background singer for Foley, performed with Middlechild, Wonder Twin Powers, Roge
