About Robin Doby and The Stovepipes
Robin Doby and the Stovepipes are a Greensboro, NC based blues band featuring blistering vocals by lead singer Robin Doby. The band is comprised of guitarist and bandleader David Bolton, guitarist Roc Williams, Rob Lundy on Bass, Courtnay Wynter on Tenor Sax, and Ezra Kelly on Drums. The Stovepipes play in and around the Southeastern region of the US. The band has recently been backing up the great Archie Bell on shows. Members are seasoned players who have performed with numerous R & B and blues artists throughout their individual careers. Guitarist Roc Williams has been a full time touring musician backing up motown and soul artists, including Archie Bell, the Four Tops, among others. Tenor sax Courtnay Wynter has performed and toured with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder among others. He played shows with Duke Ellington, and most every Motown artist in the seventies where he was a member of the Apollo Big Band. Rob Luney is a outrageous bass player whose solos are reminicent of Victor Wooten or Alphonso Johnson. Ezra Kelly is a great compliment on drums to Rob's bass. He puts a serious fire in the band with his playing -funk, swing, latin, samba, etc. Together with Rob, they are a wall of sound. David Bolton, the group's founder, has been a journeyman playing with and opening for blues and R & B stars including Buddy Guy, Wilbur Harrison, Percy Sledge and London bluesman Otis Grand. David is also an accomplished lap steel guitarist, and frequently backs up folk and blues acoustic acts around the southeast. Boltonapproached the Stovepipes and song writing with Robin Doby in mind. Robin Doby came to the blues and the band as an actress who once performed as Bessie Smith, singing, "Give Me a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer." She has performed in musicals and dramatic theatre for the last twenty years, raising three musical sons, who performed in their group "Sons of Steel." Robin loves to sing the blues, and has been bringing her experience from live theatre to the blues stage. The rest, as they say, is history... The band plays tunes from older artists such as Ruth Brown, Sam Cook, Albert Collins, Jimmy Reed and the Cadillacs, and newer artists like Tina Turner, Aretha, Alicia Keys and Bob Dylan. Their style combines blues and R & B, from Memphis to Mississippi to Chicago and back. They also play a variety of jazz/funk, from Grover Washington, WAR, Herbie Hancock, and others. There are more tunes being recorded...stay tuned, and see you at a show!
