"WOOD SHOP"

THE STURGEONS
Wood Shop
Label: Independent
4 out of 5 star
The Sturgeons play an old style of music, though they keep it fresh and unique. With throwbacks to Bob Dylan and Neil Young, identical twin brothers Calan and Lucas Hamilton show an appreciation for traditional folk music and a love of songwriting and harmonies. Their tunes are honest and thoughtful, immediately captivating by the emotions conveyed through both their lyrics and harmonies. These boys show a good deal of range: the emotionally charged number Jay Bird is beautifully constructed to convey hope and longing, while Ocean Cries utilizes the haunting melody of the harmonica to echo the sadness in the lyrics. Through their talent at the guitar, mandolin, banjo and lyrics, The Sturgeons are definitely a band to watch as their star rises in Manitoba.

"The Sturgeons"

The Sturgeons
The Wood Shop (Fluent Sound)

Twin sibs Lucas and Calan Hamilton are the core members of local folk/roots combo the Sturgeons and their terrific debut strays from the standard issue sound just enough to make it almost completely unique.

They call their music "angst folk" but it's anything but tormented or anxious. The 10 tracks here are all well-delivered originals and the faultless blend of brother Cal's pure high and lonesome vocals and the easygoing backing band (including Ridley Bent band guitarist Chris Dunn) make a strong case for a refreshed local sound that doesn't rely on the standard issue bourbon 'n' bluegrass template. There is a tinge of a '60s-vintage, Laurel Canyon sound on tracks like Get Over It and Ocean Cries while the Gord Lightfoot homage My Son is nearly flawless in its dark delivery.

The recording sounds professional and The Wood Shop definitely gives pause and thankfully sets the bar estimably higher for other Winnipeg bands churning out this style of music. 'Ö'Ö'Ö1/2
