Bio

Love & Other Perversities

In the accompanying text of The Sugarettes’ first demo Sugarettecity, we wrote that ‘we sing about love and other perversities’, and as we still do, that phrase was seen fit as title for our debut album, which will be released on Subroutine Records, October 4th 2007.

Sugarettecity, was initially intended to be just a demo, to get some feedback and a handful of shows to get the band going, only to continue recording to release a full album somewhere in the following year.

Things went slightly different though. Sugarettecity received much critical praise in the Netherlands and even abroad. 3voor12 was an instant fan and Belgium’s Studio Brussels hand-picked the disc out of their huge pile of incoming CDs to put opener Claps on their weekly rotation, after we forgot to put on the envelope we sent it in for a demo-contest. Ha! how’s that for a marketing strategy?

All that gave us the chance to play some great and some very strange shows and meet a lot of people. When things settled a bit, we stuck to our original plan and in the evenings of the summer of 2007 we returned to where we like working on our music best: Lucien Kleintjens’ home recording studio. With his invaluable help we worked on new ideas, consumed gallons of red wine and recorded eight new songs. Together with the four songs of Sugarettecity, Love & Other Perversities features 37 minutes of pop music, divided into 12 songs.

What we wrote about Sugarettecity still applies: Love & Other Perversities combines a raw musical drive with a great sense for melody and a defined taste of pop music. It contains traces of blues, it rocks, it sings about love and other perversities, it is lo-fi, compact, energetic and projects an ambitious DIY and Do It Good attitude.

In September 2007, we went abroad for the first time to do a succesful 3 gig 'Tall Poppies Tour' through the UK, together with Appie Kim, Vox Von Barun and Hallo Venray.

The core of the band is lo-fi duo Joep and Iskaa, who both sing and play guitar. Their musical collaboration is the raison d’être of The Sugarettes. Completing them are Marnix on drums (who has been working together with Iskaa for years in Foam) and Cox who plays the bass and fixes any gender (/visual :P) unbalance there might have been otherwise.

love, The Sugarettes / September 2007
