"The Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Best New Act"

The Sugar Honey Iced Tea- Ana Mallozzi, Kate Jones, Laila Aukee, Emily Shaw- formed during the fall of 2010 and in less than 6 months have earned a Motif Music Award thru the votes of local scenesters and music aficionados. No small task in an enviornment that recently put out the likes of Deer Tick and Low Anthem on the national fast track, among others. They draw, whether consciously or innately, from the great American traditions of old timey and folk, but with harmonies and solo vocals popularized in bluegrass and have a charismatic quality similar to Red Molly or a quartet of young Gillian Welch's or Alison Krauss'. They met at local open mics through friends and threw together a band on a whim....

"Providence's music scene is interesting because it feels at once like a small, supportive community of musicians, and also feels like this exciting and innovative enviornment where there are lots of differnet creative musical risks taking place. This being said, we think we are able to have a local appeal because although we are not really sure what genre to call ourselves, we work really hard to have all of our voices heard in each of our songs (literally and metaphorically speaking.) We writealmost all of our songs together, and in spite of (or maybe because of) the fact that we bring such different talents we encourage one another to go with our instincts and try new things (both vocally and instrumentally) which leads us to have the ground sound that is unique to us.
The Sugar Honey Iced Tea are inching towards releasing an EP in July, and are working on playing outside of RI, but no tour is in order yet. "This is partially because we are just sort of figuring out how to go about it and also due to the fact that Ana is the only band member with a car in Rhode Island. It is a Ford Focus, which does NOT easily fit a cello, banjo, kickdrum, four girls, and other various instruments," they say. "We found this out the hard way."

Bio

The Sugar Honey Iced Tea began their journey one sparkling Providence night in September 2010, when the four young women were watching their friends Last Good Tooth play at a bar downtown. Half jokingly, one of them said since each girl played an instrument, they might as well all hang out and bring the instruments along.

The first few "practices" consisted mainly of drinking wine, eating cupcakes, and writing unnecessary back story to their song "Giacomo," without really making any progress on the song itself.

But, by the time they finally played through the song once, they all felt something in their hearts they have never felt before. They were stunned, and have been writing and playing together ever since.

Kate Jones likes gnomes, is a part- time amateur puppeteer, and plays the ukulele and a banjolele named Waverly. She can also beatbox.

Laila Aukee plays ukulele and can hula hoop at the same time. She likes Elvis, cinnamon gum, and the color yellow. She also plays in the band The Silks.

Ana Mallozzi collects sunglasses. She adores the Avett Brothers. She plans to move to Wales and own a goat farm later in life. She plays the banjo, cello, and a kickdrum called the Drumasaur.

Emily Shaw plays mandolin. Her favorite spice girl is Scary Spice. She also fell asleep while co-piloting a plane when she was six.

Their favorite food collectively is chickpeas.
