Bio

John McNicholas has been playing music for a while now. Starting the late 80s with highly regarded new wavers, Parade in Paris, proto-grunge band, Factory Black, straight up 90s-Alt rockers, Lie, and best-of-the-bay winners, Spiller. He's was an institution in the Tampa Bay music scene for years with his snappy hooks, growling guitars and energetic performances. And while bands would come and go over the years the idea of band as community was always really important to him.

Fast forward a few years, and John relocated to Atlanta, GA for a fresh start with some new tunes in tow. A few solo EPs were release and the briefly-rocking band, Supervisor of the Loveless Average put out an EP of tunes, with the assistance of Russ Fowler (Rage against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots) helping out on mixes. Shows were played and new songs written, and while good times we're had, the idea of the band as community was missing, and frankly, missed.

The idea for The Sunset District came to John a few years ago. "I wanted to do something different, not just a band, but a project based around a group of friends. Songs would be written, and shows would be played, but people could come and go as they were available. I could play some solo shows, we could play some band shows. Flexible. Fun. No pressure. No stress."

"I really started to think about the things that I enjoyed the most about creating music and performing and more and more it was the interaction with other musicians, creative people, and the audience that those creative endeavors attracted.

With this in mind, John, with multi-instrumentalist and producer, Marco Corales set out to make the new record with friends like Kim Ware, from The Good Graces, of which John is also a member, Jenn DownsElizabeth Elkins (Mama's Blue Dress, Granville Automatic, The Swear), Jim Combs (Sensitive Chaos), and Martin Rice, with live assistance from Jenn Downs and Juliana Finch.

The resulting debut record from The Sunset District is a 37-minute mix of pop-rock tunes, and sonic experiments with hooks that gets to the point with each song for 3 minutes and the tosses you on to the next one urging you to hit repeat or flip the record to keep the party going.

The band recently release a full-band EP in January and is already working on new material for an upcoming single and full-length record.
