Bio

THE TAMLINS are highlighted in the documentary feature film "Get Ready to Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae," which started filming March 29th, 2008. An album and a concert are also a part of this exciting project, which brings together some of Jamaica's most important contributers to the genre.

Their 8th solo album, "Roots Rock Love and Emotion" is set for release in late 2008, on the Give Green label.

THE TAMLINS, consisting of Derrick Lara, Junior Moore, and Carlton Smith are known not just for their amazing vocal abilites, but also their versatility. They shine equally and easily with Roots, Rock Steady, Reggae, Rythm and Blues, and Soul.

Beginning as a night club act in Jamaica, recognition came quickly. Inevitably, numerous local artists clamored for the sweet harmonies of THE TAMLINS, engaging them as background vocalists. Subsequently their musical talent soared, backing such renowned artists Delroy Wilson, Pat Kelly, John Holt, Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh. They later toured the world with Peter Tosh. Resultant of the Tosh affiliation a rapport was formed with international stars Sly and Robbie of Taxi Productions. THE TAMLINS recorded many singles on The Taxi Label, notably “Baltimore”, the number one hit in Jamaica released internationally by EMI. Securing the number one spot in Jamaica for 12 weeks, this single was judged the “Number One Record of the Year” on JBC’s “Top 100” for 1980. The same year the group also won the “Best Group Award” from JBC, Radio Jamaica and the Daily News.

In the 80's, THE TAMLINS toured Japan and performed at Madison Square Gardens, New York and in other American cities. In 1986, they were back in Jamaica performing on “Dancehall ‘86” at Cinema One with Half Pint, Josey Wales and Culture, among others. Receiving a standing ovation they were judged the “Best Performance of 1986” at the annual Rockers Awards Show. The trio also “tore the house down” at Sunsplash ’86 and the Taxi Connection Shows that same year. Further success was realized for THE TAMLINS on the popular U.S. television program, “Miami Vice”. The episode entitled, “Soul on Ice” featured original material written and performed by this dynamic trio. Furthermore, they were to be the first Jamaican group to be featured on a top - rated television series.

Recent performances include: From Jamaica With Love, Vancouver Canada, April 2008. JAVAA Tribute, Kingston Jamaica, February 2008. Rebel Salute, Kingston Jamaica, December 2006. The Africa Unite Bob Marley concert, Ghana 2006.

The TAMLINS ability to hit the charts year in and year out is further evidence of the versatility of this group.
Since 2000 several impressive singles have kept the TAMLINS in steady rotation on Jamaican radio, as well as overseas. A much sought after album, “Reasons” was released as a limited edition by the Jammy’s label in 2004. Their highly anticipated performance at the 2006 Rebel Salute in Jamaica delighted the audience with a glimpse of the magic that is THE TAMLINS.

THE TAMLINS continue to excite and delight audiences wherever they perform with their electric stage presence, their amazing vocals, and their versatility.
