"A handful of bands for $5 means a lot of rock at Jose’s in Monterey."

By Adam Joseph
On eBay, $5 can buy a switchblade comb, flowering moose nuggets, a fart extinguisher or boss-be-gone pills. This Friday, $5 buys access to a versatile, five-band lineup at Jose’s.

The Taphandles – from the overcast streets of Seattle – make their Monterey debut with sandpaper-rough, acoustic soul tunes. “Illusion,” off the group’s debut EP, begins with the soft-spoken growl of a vintage organ before breaking out into an explosion of acoustic funk fronted by Jake Patterson’s resonant vocals. “Pepper” has the raw, whisky-pickled emotion of a dusty old trailer park in Mobile, Alabama. Patterson – who writes many of the songs with his older brother and bandmate Lane – says the two were inspired to write the tune at a bar over several pints. The first line of the song is: “Have another pint, fit my head just right.” - Monterey County Weekly

Bio

Founded by the brothers Patterson in 2008, The Taphandles blend Rock, Funk, Soul, Folk, and a little Country to make a nice cushy playground for themselves. They want you to join them on said playground and go twinsies down the twisty slide. With funky, melodic guitar riffs, three part vocal harmonies, and a rhythm section tight enough to make you consider a bigger pair of pants, it's impossible to say no. Ranging from tight, syncopated grooves, to explosive jamming, to slow dancing swings, there is something for everyone to love. After finding their voice in the greater Seattle area they are more than ready to play great shows for new faces. With an easygoing, open minded, yet professional attitude towards making music, The Taphandles are a sure thing for a great show.
