"They dub themselves “dirty tonk,” but it would be a misnomer to simply lump Asheville’s Trainwreks into the drunken, drawling bar band that the name might imply. There’s a lot of swing and jazz influence in the band’s debut, Ready to Die, which indicates that despite the half-joking posturing about booze and girls, there’s a huge amount of high-caliber musicianship going on. Intricate mandolin and violin arrangements and swampy pedal steel play off a tight horn section—giving the record the authentic shine of vintage country dancehalls with a little bit of Klezmer waltz thrown in. That being said—the first line of Ready is “Drank some beer, shed a tear,” and at least lyrically, the rest of the record follows suit. Lead vocalist Micha Fishman’s gritty, low register vocals conjure a less morose Johnny Cash and definitely focus on nights of alcohol-infused bad boy behavior and the morning-after hangover. But luckily for listeners who want a little bit more depth with their drunk, Ready offers an equal amount of instrumental Western swing and classic country. So which is it boys? Swing dancing or go out swinging?
