"The Early Bird Picks: May 10 - 16"

The Turn Ups play a ‘60s retro pop that just makes you feel good, like watching reruns of The Monkees and listening to Buddy Holly records. Impossible to over think, the bouncing grove of their music produces the same child-like high as overdosing on cotton candy. If it’s been a bad week, this show should lift your spirits and have you skipping again before the night is through. - Live PDX

"The Turn Ups"

Very impressed with you r sound, a perfect amalgamation of early rock 'n' roll and beat by way of the River Mersey. Just the kind of thing my
listeners and readers crave. It's not often I find this kind of music
played with such skill and heart. Great stuff all around, from the
50's-meets-rockabilly-meets-doo-wop-rhythm-meets-rock 'n' roller "The Record Skips" to the early rock 'n' roll burner "Cleopatra Jones" and
the toe-tapping, romantic (yes, romantic!) ode to the "Toyota
Corolla." I have to add that these songs are extremely well-recorded
and played. Great fidelity and a wide stereo soundfield rules the
day. Kudos! - Pure Pop Radio

Bio

Much more trendy than the vegetable soundalike, The Turn Ups borrow their name from the British term for "cuff's",...a silliy little fashion that keeps coming back.

The Turn Ups rolled up in Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2004. The four-piece band consists of Eric Ramon (Continental Miniatures, Francis Farmer Gals), Jenni Lynn Nissila (Telephone, Sophe Lux, and Sugar-Free), Joel Roth, and Mark Hitchcox. The band’s self-titled CD was released in December 2006, recorded/produced by The Turn Ups and Larry Crane (Tape-Op magazine, Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus) at Jackpot Records, and mastered by long-time Portland musician/producer Tony Lash (Heatmiser, Dandy Warhols). The 12 songs on the CD offer lyrics laden with harmony, highlighted in the male-female exchange between Ramon and Jenni Lynn on “Gotta Getta Job,” and the sweet amalgam of voices on “The Record Skips” and “I Remember the Night.” Songs such as “I Saw U” offer humorous, tongue-in-cheek lyrics with local references like Voodoo Donuts, Berbati’s, and Powell’s Books. Listeners will enjoy these songs, which are accented by tasteful licks backed by driving rhythms. Described by Pure Pop Radio’s Alan Haber (http://www.buhdge.com) as “a perfect amalgamation of early rock 'n' roll and beat by way of the River Mersey,” the songs on this release define the original “Quirkabilly” aesthetic of The Turn Ups.
