"Under Our Radar"

The Uncle Bill Roach Band must have been under our Radar. - Star Telegram by Macolm Mayhew

"Roundup of local-music happenings"

Roundup of local-music happenings:
First, a warning: Pat Green now lives in the North Texas area, Dallas specifically. El Paso is looking nicer and nicer.
For some odd reason, LA filmmaker Justin Mitchell chose Trees in Dallas over the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth to film a live Death Cab for Cutie clip for the band's newly released DVD Drive Well, Sleep Carefully: On the Road with Death Cab for Cutie (why can't bands call their in-concert projects just plain Live anymore? Typing that goofy Drive Well title, and making sure the punctuation is correct, is too much work). Death Cab has played the Ridglea a half-dozen times. And Trees is more over than me.
It was odd -- but very cool -- enough to see Old 97's singer Rhett Miller play a yoga studio in Dallas a few weeks ago, but this seems even odder, and cooler: The band's playing Billy Bob's. They'll be there Sept. 2. Tickets are $9-$16 and go up for grabs 10 a.m. Aug. 1; I'll remind you, of course.
Delbert McClinton, Larry Joe Taylor and other Texas-music heavyweights have hosted cruise vacation trips, turning big ships into floating White Elephants. It's now the Uncle Bill Roach Band's turn. If you haven't heard of them, obviously you didn't read my Feb. 13, 2004, column, wherein I plugged their then-new CD -- and, boy, my blurb sure did break them nationally!
Since then, their manager-type/decision-maker scored them a gig with Carnival Group Cruise Vacation Planners, and now they're the featured act on a five-day trip that goes from Galveston to Cozumel and Calica/Playa Del Carmen and back again. Now, they're not getting paid for the show, but jeez, twist their arms. If you're interested in going, you can get a few hundred dollars off the price with the Uncle Bill Roach discount, which Carnival knows more about than I do. Go to www.theunclebillroachband.com.
Wonder if they need a roadie. I could carry guitar strings.

ABOUT THE BAND

“The Uncle Bill Roach Band” was first put together by Mike Slagle in 1976. The band is named after Slagle’s great uncle, Bill Roach, who attended yearly hootenannies at their home in Monkstown, Texas. All the members are proud to be native Texans and all are from generations of deep rooted family musical backgrounds.

The band has developed throughout the years. They may have some new members, but continue playing the same fun loving music that keeps fans tapping their toes and coming back to hear them again and again. They play Texas original music, country, bluegrass, classic rock, tropical, and a lot of FUN stuff!
I guess its Banjo Rockin’ Country Texas Style with an Americana Twist,

The band proudly won 1st place show this year at Larry Joe Taylor’s 16th Annual Texas Music Festival & Chili cook-off held in Stephenville, Texas. Almost 20,000 people attended. They were the 1st place winners last year and the year before, and the 2nd place winners in 2002 when the festival was still held in Meridian, TX.
