"The Velvematics"

Always up for a good time, this Akron quartet rocks like a latter-day Cheap Trick. Their rugged, hook-heavy riffs mine the rumble of garage (on the Jet-biting "Be My Girl"), raid the rock-and-roll storehouse of Chuck Berry rave-ups ("Take a Chance"), and plug in the power-pop jangle ("She's the One"). Singer-guitarist Jonnie Vincenzo's sneering delivery provides the proper amount of attitude for these about-a-girl songs, while bassist Russell Bombik and drummer Chris Gibbs' backing vocals energize the catchy choruses. It's a nice balance of bar-band crackle and catchy songwriting.

"Romancing the Velvet"

Romancing the velvet:

Having played throughout Northeast Ohio over the past year, Akron-based rock act the Velvematics is finally releasing its debut album "Dialectic Materialism," which falls somewhere between the Yardbirds and the Romantics in the garage-rock vein. "This is our version of the rock 'n' roll revolution," said singer Jonnie Vincenzo. "We're like the anti-American Idol.' We're trying to put the dance back into rock 'n' roll." Having already played dates in New York, Detroit, Cincinnati and Youngstown, the quartet is hoping its new CD will open doors in the south and on the East Coast. For now, it celebrates its new album with a CD release party at 9 tonight at the House of Blues' Cambridge Room, East Fourth Street and Euclid Avenue, Cleveland.

Special to The Plain Dealer

Garage rock purists: Using British Invasion bands as a point of reference, the four members of Cleveland-based outfit the Velvematics are hoping to put the roll back into rock 'n' roll with a loud sound and rich swagger. "Our goal is a rock 'n' roll revolution, to kind of go against the mainstream, which is either real poppy or real heavy," said singer/guitarist Jonnie Vincenzo. "We're just trying to do our thing." Vincenzo, Russell Bombik (bass), Jimi Frankito (guitar) and Chris Gibbs (percussion) are readying the release of its debut album, due out this summer, with local shows. - Cleveland Plain dealer

Bio

We are in a time where society no longer has anything innovative, hip or cool to offer. Real music and originality seem to be a thing of the past. Let’s not forget about “American Idol” stamping out singers in their factory to sing their plastic pop songs. But we are on the verge of a cataclysmic event. Earthquakes, buildings crumble; everything is reduced to debris and rubble. Who is this we see emerging from the ruins? Could they be the new rock-n-roll revolutionaries? “The Velvematics” here to save the world from bubblegum pop music and that same ole’ country song. Donned in all black leather with shirt and tie, they look like characters pulled off the screen at a Quinton Tarentino movie. Their sound is like John Lee Hooker jamming with The Yardbirds. In your face and larger than life, they know how to Rock without forgetting the roll. Formed in 2004 by singer/guitarist Jonnie Vincenzo and bassist Russell Bombik and completed by the addition of traper Chris Gibbs, The Velvematics are poised to take the world by the balls and bring it into the new Rock-N-Roll revolution.
Their debut release “Dialectic Materialism” is to be released august 2006 and is set to overthrow the elite. The album is filled with sounds of both the British Invasion and Blues undertones that you won’t hear anywhere else. This band is set to take over the world and convert everyone into Rock Revolutionaries. Stay tuned; they will be saving a town near you!
