The Velvet Teen is a rock trio from the northern Bay Area whose songs range from the beautiful to the bittersweet, with soaring countertenor melodies, tastefully delicate harmonies, and a unique sound not to be missed.
That's what we've told the press for years (and they still buy it!), but it's really just these three people playing music:
People who have heard our latest CD keep telling us how much they admire that we take such monumental risks with the music we make. While I understand what they mean, it still amazes me that this idea is thought at all. Our main goal in the band (our mission statement, if you will), doesn't go far beyond keeping ourselves interested, stimulated, and challenged by what we do. Once you've played the same songs a thousand times in a couple hundred cities, the desire for change inevitably becomes greater and greater. We may lose some people in the shuffle of evolving styles and tastes, but we believe that the heart of our what we do is more powerful than any "type" of music we could ever play. And quite frankly, we give our fans more credit than that, trusting that the ones that really get it will evolve along with us.
With that in mind, what risk is there? Not making enough money to support ourselves? We're already doing that. If we ever make a living at this, it will be due to the gracious support of the people who love us for what we do naturally. If we never sold another record, we'd keep making music, even if we were the only ones that would hear it. Music created with an end result in mind, like fame or wealth, always reeks of its concealed lusts, and as Steve Albini says, "You can always smell a corpse in the house."
We consider ourselves to be the luckiest kids in the world to be able to write music, play our songs, and know so many amazing people because of it. We would be nothing without our friends, family, and the countless wonderful people who listen to our music, put us up in their homes, and support us in any and every way possible. We thank you whole-heartedly and promise nothing less than our greatest effort in everything that we do.
