Not even out of high school, members of a local band are making big waves and grabbing the attention of more than just adoring teenage fans.

The Verge is comprised of Brent Bilyeu, drummer, Desmond Myers, guitarist and lead vocalist, and Dylan Stobbe on bass.

Their music has been buzzing around Iredell County since the band formed last fall.

They have built a name and reputation for jamming out an odd mixture of funk, soul and rock.

With Desmond a spitting image of a younger John Mayer, the band's sound is refreshing.

Competing against bands from across the country, The Verge took first place at the Battle of the Bands Muzak Competition in Charlotte in March.

"We worked our butts off. We knew we had to have this," Desmond said.

As part of their winnings, the guys received 16 hours of studio time, which they say was the biggest reward, but they may soon be singing a different tune.

In their prize package, they received a trip to Noise 2007, a summer camp for aspiring musicians.

"It's pretty awesome. Last year this time, I had no idea I'd be in a band doing so well," Dylan said. "I had no idea we'd be going to California. It's a pretty cool opportunity."

The band will leave Saturday for the two-week camp on California State University Northridge campus in Los Angeles.

Hosted by Muzak Heart and Soul Foundation, the camp gives artists a backstage pass to learn about every facet of the music industry. The camp is geared to give 15- to 17-year-olds an inside look at how the business side of the industry runs.

"The reason a lot of artists don't make it is because they don't know about the business side of things," Desmond said.
"We want to get our music out there, and they're going to show us how to do that."

During their time on the West Coast, the group will visit recording studios, see the production process and take etiquette classes on how to interact with media - a skill they have seemingly already mastered.

"It's cool for us as a band to grow our knowledge of music and business and learn how to handle things," Brent said.

When asked what their ultimate goal, they don't spout off the usual aspiring artist rhetoric, but instead give a humble and somewhat surprising answer.

The high-schoolers want to stay clear from a manufactured sound while reviving purer forms of music. They aspire to bring realness and truth to music through every guitar riff and vocal Desmond belts out.

"Our goal is to touch people with our music and to bring back the way music was because everything is so processed," Brent said.

So how do they sum up the past nine months of their musical career?

"I feel very blessed, kind of like I'm living my dream. We've been so blessed to have all these opportunities handed to us," Desmond said.

Dylan agrees.

"I'm in disbelief this is actually going to happen and happy to see our music is taking us somewhere," Dylan said
