"Critics Choice - The Vergers"

Since forming in July 2007, the Vergers (due at the Larimer Lounge on Friday, July 15) have been something of an an unknown quantity in the underground rock scene in Denver — but it's not for lack of effort or quality material. Like most bands, the Vergers wrestled with a bevy of influences early on, but while its roots are obvious, the act has long outgrown the clumsiness of a new band. You can hear a bit of Stephen Fellows's emotional stridency in Trip Wilkes's vocals, and the band has always excelled at capturing the urgent vibe of English post-punk bands of the '80s. With their latest material, the Vergers display a keen ear for bright, swirling melodies that sound hopeful and triumphant even as they trade in the darker shadings of atmosphere. - Westword Magazine

"The Vergers"

The Vergers’ four-song EP has a few high points and a couple low. Cool, swirly, sun-drenched overdrive guitar on “Know you well”… kind of sounds like Big Country after they discovered a Verve album. Concentrating on that sound and working on the songwriting craft could lead to bigger things for the Vergers. Low point was “Lavender and Roses”… sounds like a million other bands you’ll never hear. High point, “Gasoline,” proves that somebody in the band owns Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jesus and Mary Chain CDs. “On the Ground” closes out the EP. Aside from some timing issues, a good tune reminiscent of an old mid-90s band called the Verlaines. Only time will tell if the Vergers keep working on their craft and make some noise on the scene or fade into oblivion on the dung heap of broken band dreams. -- by Doug Anderson - Colorado Music Buzz
