Biography

The Vertical Gin Line

Influences include Bob Dylan, Philip Glass, QOTSA, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Tool, The Mars Volta, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley.

The Vertical Gin Line (TVGL) is the brainchild of Todd Hovanec and Matt Moscardi. Todd, the sometimes eccentric, always ambient guitarist for TVGL has roots in neo-classical, jazz and hard rock, emulating artists from Philip Glass to Queens of the Stone Age in previous band incantations. Matt, the strong-arming egocentric singer/songwriter, developed a style fusing roots rock and art-electronica in his early bands. When the two met in the fall of 2003 and formed TVGL, the music ran the gamut.

While most bands claim to be "the next big thing," TVGL makes no such boast. Instead, TVGL makes their esoteric roots accessible to the masses without losing the edge and swagger that makes rock music important. Live, this band generates something unique, possessing a stage presence and musical prescience that makes converts of audiences in every venue they play.

Hopefully, that next convert might be you.

No Fly Zone

No Fly Zone

it's safer than cigarettes
all of this artifice
cancerous cataracts
indecent tone
our tin pan alley
version of sex is the
only thing left that they're
letting us own
colorful language
the way that we walk the
clothes on our backs are the
next thing we lose
when it's our color that's
taken away in the
name of protecting
the freedom to choose

all of our votes
all of our thoughts
all of the ignorant
all of the greed
where is the voice
and the anger
antipathy
f*ck1ng the
f.c.c.
silencing me
oh

it's
my
contention
we need violence
it's
our
dissention
keeping them at bay

the cause and effect of their
hetero sex and the
way they digest
every word like a gun
sitting in corners
penting their fingers
figuring ways to keep
silent the sun
campaign of silence
duct tape my mouth
afraid what i'll say
afraid who'll care
if i shot the president
they'd say it was obvious
look at his voice
look at his hair

all of our votes
all of our thoughts
all of the greed
all of the god
hard to believe
that we sanctify
church and the state
as one and the same
when they're not
oh

it's
my
contention
we need violence
it's
our
dissention
keeping them at bay
it's
our
self riteous
puritanic lie
lie, lie, lie...

spit curvy words
to save us from ourselves
cuz if i curse
it's straight to f*ck1ng hell

is it treason to go f*ck yourself?

Learn On

Learn On

i feel your ire
brimming inside the car
and i've no right to stand on high
invading your dreams
waking to breaking and mental tears
i've no right to make you smile
we're both so tired
and i haven't yet lifted my eyes
to see you sleeping over me
ashamed on fire while you scream
and i've no right pine or bleed

and i sit inside my brain
tossing what you said to me
and i want for you to feel safe in your sleep
oh i'm sorry i forgot where i was
i'm sorry i couldn't be strong
i need to learn on

i can't exist
without your fingers wrapped in mine
twisting sideways eight in you
i know i missed
i added the element fear
twisting til that fear subdues
the way you laugh
the waters behind your eyes
i'm afraid of losing you
the one mistake i'd always rue
please believe that i need you

and i sit inside my brain
tossing what you said to me
and i want for you to feel safe in your sleep
oh i'm sorry i forgot where i was
i'm sorry i couldn't be strong
i need to learn on

i need to learn on

Channel 35

Channel 35

i decided
i talk about myself too much
in the valleys of my
greying test tube thoughts
condescending
cascading wall of combat boots
that i wear
to all the wars i like to start
what...

you just said makes me nuts
what...
you just did makes me come

you're my, you're my last ditch effort
you're my, you're my last resort
you're my, you're my last ditch effort
you're my, you're my last resort

i decided
you talk about yourself enough
porcelain teardrops
moisten like a pear
quit defending
how your maple syrup fingers
fucking slide in and out
of your throat, of your hair
what...

i just did left you cold
where
i begin is where i'm wrong

you're my, you're my last ditch effort
you're my, you're my last resort
you're my, you're my last ditch effort
you're my, you're my last resort

i am your god
i am your sins
