"Unsigned Giants: Cool-fusion"

How The Warplanes do it right

Fusion gets a bad rap. Though potentially devastating in the wrong hands, if the power spurts from more forward-thinking minds we get little glimpses of genius, things like cran-apple, cookie-dough ice cream and sporks!

By combining two pretty good things into one awesome thing, mankind takes tiny metaphoric steps on the sun’s surface. Harnessing this energy recreates that I-found-a-$20-bill-in-my-coat-pocket feeling at your very whim. Musical portmanteaus The Warplanes exemplify this process both in their style and in the way they record music.

Though most of the band hails from north-ish Houston, The Warplanes did not come together until making their way to our musically inclined mistress of a city. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Isaac James Routh, keyboardist/vocalist Luke Dalton, bassist Andrew Dalton, drummer/percussionist Aric Garcia, and lead guitarist Jonathon "Jelly" Ellington. Their music has a large blues influence with touches of southern, psych, and indie rock. Throw in Isaac’s haunting voice and they have a sound that I’ve dubbed “phantom rock.” I make up genres, no big deal. - Uweekly Austin

"Another Great Performance"

The Warplanes dove onto the stage minutes after midnight. The music is ridiculously hard to pigeon hole, much like many other bands in town. If you are not straight up country or rock/metal or rap then you have that “Austin Sound”. The Warplanes embodied this with the group of guys on stage. A lead guitar, an acoustic guitar wielding lead singer, a keyboard/rhythm guitarist, bass, and drums. It wasn’t quite country, it had a kind of rock edge to it, sweet harmonies, and a front man with attitude. Yes Sir! The Warplanes are pure Austin. - William Tompkins (LIVE MUSIC IN AUSTIN)

"The Local Music Lookout"

Founded in January 2010, Austin-based band The Warplanes channels blues rock with touches of folk, soul, and psychedelia. Isaac James Routh, Aric Garcia, Andrew Dalton, Luke Dalton, and Jelly Ellington make up the band. Instantly recognizable by his perfect pitch and smooth yet powerful vocal style, Isaac J. Routh is the frontman on lead vocals and guitar. Luke Dalton is the group multi-instrumentalist on keys, percussion, guitar, and vocals. Jelly Ellington creates catchy melody one after another on lead guitar. Andrew Dalton is on the bass and Aric Garcia plays drums, percussion, and vocals.

Their recent 2015 EP release Epigenesis features the song “Gemini”, which lyrically revolves around the idea of the split personality and the struggle that someone can have when trying to rid themselves from a person or situation of control. It’s about an environment that someone can create that is full of both negatives and positives which ultimately has a dominating effect on their (for lack of a better term) victim. Gemini tries to portray the effects of a volatile relationship between two people. - KTSW 89.9
