"The Weakness-Lovers and Liars"

The Weakness just released their debut album on June 1st, so it would seem appropriate to feature them on the site right about now.

The EP, entitled Lovers and Liars (I find that those two seemed to be one and the same in the more unfortunate cases), was released independently; and the band is managed by Static Management.

The band’s bio reads like this:

It is commonly acknowledged that for something to live, something else has to die. If one were to venture forth in search of an example, one must look no further than where you find yourself now. From the ashes of a band once called October Nites has risen a powerful Pop-Rock Phoenix known as The Weakness.

The stars had already aligned, it would seem, when the face-melting finger wizardry of Lead Guitarist Naren Ananda chanced to unite with the soul shaking percussive styling of Drummer Brandon Wakeham. However, when combined with the thunderous support of Bassist Bryan King, and the histrionic lyrical onslaught of Vocalist Ryan Coughlin, something truly inspired has been brought to life.

So, gentle reader, I humbly implore you to hesitate no longer and… give it up for The Weakness.

The first track on the album, ‘Mean to Me’, will reach out and grab you if you are a fan of the pop-rock genre (it’s embedded below). I’m thinking that the chorus of the second track, ‘Blackout’, (‘your lips your touch/so contagious/’til I blackout with my friends/blackout with my friends once again’) refers to people who are infatuated with their significant other…until they get some alcohol in their system. Then all bets are off.

The second half of Lovers and Liars is more rock-oriented than the first, and I couldn’t figure out who they reminded me of until I heard ‘Time Bomb.’ That track definitely reminded me of a song that Halifax would do. They both fall into some kind of pop-punk/pop-rock/rock hybrid.

The last track on the album, ‘Tied Down’, definitely had a Valencia-feel to it. For those of you who haven’t heard them, A) get on that, right after you B) read this Valencia We All Need a Reason to Believe Review. - Outsider Vocals

"The Weakness- Lovers and Liars"

This EP is an impressive debut from pop-rockers ‘The Weakness’, its catchy, has some good riffs and flowing-structured songs. What separates this band from many pop-rock bands to date is that they show that they can play their instruments above the usual basic standard. The EP includes many guitar solos and consistent drum fills proving their skills at their instruments (not saying their amazing but their better than most in pop-punk), the drummer Brandon Wakeham frequently used the double bass peddle which isn’t usually heard of in these sort of bands.

It’s nice not to here your obvious pop-rock with four bars repeated consistently for the whole song but a band who goes for good riffs and solid musicianship, however, this puts the band in some criticism as out of tune notes become clear and consistent throughout the EP, this is only present in the songs where they have come up with interesting riff instead of constant chords, this is frustrating to listen to because it just doesn’t sound good. They need some production, also, after listening to this EP over and over again I got very bored, it is quite generic to pop-rock.

It's no surprise these guys are on warped tour, this is a band that plays radio friendly rock, they do not scream. Naren Ananda, the guitarist, is plays his guitar well and he shows skills throughout. However, his solo’s seem rushed, thus, resulting in slightly weird and out-of-place solo’s which include off putting notes in the bridge of the songs which just don’t fit, he would have been better simplifying them to help the song flow or spending a good long time going through them because they need to fit better and he’s proven that he can with the solo on ‘Time Bomb’. In addition, the bass as in every other band in this genre is boring, it follows the same chord patterns as the guitars and thus is wasted, I really can’t stand it that basses in pop music have been rendered to boring repetitive simple instruments.

I recommend this EP to anyone that likes this genre because these guys show a lot of promise, hopefully the label they sign to won’t take away their creativity because these guys will do fairly well, if you dislike this genre don’t bother because you probably won’t be a fan. The EP is easy listening and fun, but, it’s repetitive and to be honest not that different to others so give it a chance, it’s corny and enjoyable, perfect for their target teenage audience. - Steokiller
