Biography

‘The Wedded Bliss are just plain wonderful, a rose scented brew of beer-tap poetry and narrative country with a side plate of 50s rock melody. Cheerful, melancholy, funny…’

- BMA Magazine.

The Wedded Bliss is a labour of love for singer/songwriter Randall Blair, Matt Nightingale (double bass / vocals) and Lachlan Coventry (pedal steel guitar / electric guitar / vocals). With a shared love of toe tappin’ swing, gospel harmony, and country heartache, the trio has played countless gigs from the Streets of Tamworth to the dingy pubs of Melbourne, and even a few caravan parks in between.

The band blends old school country, blues & gospel to create original songs of love, drunkenness, poverty, desire, faith & hope. ‘Tailor Made Heartache’ - the band’s third album - has songs of losers, boozers and users, but all told with tenderness and wit.

The band has played countless pubs gigs and supports with acts like Lior, The Angels, The Kill Devil Hills, Conway Savage (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), bluesman Lloyd Spiegel, King Curly, Gina Villalobos (USA) and Mad Violet (Canada).

The band has also performed at various festivals such as Corinbank, the National Multicultural Festival, The Goulburn Blues Festival and The National Folk Festival.

Now, after nearly ten years and countless incarnations, the band has just completed their 3rd album ‘Tailor-Made Heartache’.

It is a stripped-back album that was recorded live over 3 days in January 2011, and launched at the National Folk Festival in April 2011. The trio sang & performed all of the instruments on the album – pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, and all guitars.

The album features the gospel, bluegrass & honky-tonk sounds, and the sweet vocal harmonies of their live show. The songs follow the bittersweet of lives of lovers, drunkards, murderers, the faithful and the faithless.

The Wedded Bliss is a band that that will have you tapping your toes, singing along and perhaps even crying in your beer.

Lyrics

Broken Bird

Written By: Randall Blair

I’ve been living life
Like an airline disaster
Broken teeth made of plaster
In a house made of straw

It’s been trying times
Said the way I’ve tried
Like a broken bird sings a four letter word
Like a broken bird sings a four letter word

Been punch drunk I’ve been down
And my faith it unwound
Tried to hide my disgrace
Lose my face in the crowd

It’s been crying times
Said the way I’ve cried
Like a teenage bride on her first wedded night
Like a teenage bride on her first wedded night

You were faithful, I was thoughtless
You were patient, I was cruel
Two wrongs made a right mess of me
Two wrongs made a right mess of you

Now you’re drinking dry
Taking natural highs
In another man’s arms
In another man’s crimes

It’s been lying times
Said the way I’ve lied
For the end of desire
For the end I deny

You were faithful, I was thoughtless
You were patient, I was cruel
Two wrongs made a right mess of me
Two wrongs made a right mess of you
Two wrongs was the best I could do

Now I’ve had all my doubts
Bitter blood in my mouth
Tried to wash you right down
Tried to clean you right out

It’s been trying times
Said the way I’ve tried
Like a broken bird Sings a four letter word
Like a broken bird Sings a four letter word
Like a broken bird Sings a four letter word
