We will be recording our first album in July 2009.
It will likely be released via Onan Records out of Portland, OR.

Founded upon the remains of longtime Portland band Crack City Rockers, The Welfare State are a kind of localized supergroup featuring a variety of PDX scenesters in reverse. All 4 members have played (and continue to play) in any number of local acts ranging from Caguama to the Last Regiment Drum Corps to punk legends 8 Foot Tender. The Welfare State are often described as a cross between Television (the band) and West Coast psych guitar mainstays like The Grateful Dead, but there's plenty of post-punk, funk and disco involved as well. Songs are the primary focus here and the band brings together a sharp (occasionally harsh) intellect, snarling guitars and unexpected (but very "pop") sonic moments and passages. Think Big Star if they'd thought bigger and broader. And with no "star" pretensions. Debut album, "High Times," expected late 2009.
