"The Cheese Factor"

It's a cliche to say "Don't judge a book by its cover." But it fits when discussing The Whiskey and the Devil Chaplain, which is neither a metal band nor satanic.
It is, however, a six-piece Americana group from Visalia worth checking out. Guitar player/singer Nick Hernandez's voice has a Bob Dylan quality on "I Am A Liar" and adds to the haunting beauty of "Did it Make You Insane." Yet it's the catchiness of "Angeline" that makes this a great EP.

the Whiskey and Devil Chaplain is a fantastic mix of indie roots, folk and straight ahead Americana music. Formed at the latter end of 2007 (in one form or another) the Whiskey is making a name one show at a time through their knock down live performances. The band is held together by six musicians each coming from diverse musical backgrounds. The players of the Whiskey and the Devil Chaplain create a sound that at times can be missing in the world of independent music, but they continue to play the old goods and bring with it that timeless delivery. Indeed, the eclectic mix of musicians in this band is what makes it unique, some coming from punk backgrounds, some from folk.
Their influences vary as widely as their personal backgrounds: Hernandez: Wilco, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, The Silos, Wrinkle Neck Mules, Langhorne Slim, Son Volt. Potorke: Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Low, Velvet Underground, Built to Spill, Smashing Pumpkins, Joy Division. Crain: Dylan, Old Crow Medicine Show, Avett bros.
Most of them come from a place full of music history and small enough that if you're a musician you can bet you know the first name of every musician in town. That is how they came together over the last few months; meeting players at a fourth of July party or a random show in San Francisco. However they came to be together it has worked amazingly well and they've had a great response from people that have taken in our shows. They've played with the Truth and Salvage Company, Dark Meat/Vomit Lasers, Nashboro Cane Cutters to name a few.
