The Wiggins
Feed the Ghost 7" EP
(Dull Knife)

Twangy guitar, drum machine, and braying country-folk crooning in the shack by the edge of the ravine. Jon Read is the Wiggins and before this one sinks into the blues (but don't worry, it's pretty good), tries to slam the Country Teasers against the Raveonettes, kicking up an ungodly squall. "Dog" is the result, ardent in the face of the sleaze it's surrounded in, and man it's great. Vocals might detract for some, but for those of us who understand life on the right side of the Cramps-ian divide, that's not going to be an issue. An unlikely but effective pairing of ideas several generations apart from one another that works. Pretty well. 300 numbered copies. Dull Knife is winning.

Sometimes the weirdest key words will trigger me to buy a record. In this case, I read a review that mentioned "David Lynch", and that was all I needed. I didn't need to hear a note of this, and I figured I would like it.The Wiggins is John Read, who you might include in the current lo-fi movement that privileges the simplicity of early Rock 'N Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Surf, and a little hint of country twang (especially in the vocals), recording everything in the red and releasing records like this one that seem effortless. I suppose the drum machine (at times) gives this a Jesus and Mary Chain vibe, but in the end this record is one of the best I have heard in a while, leaving me to track down the other Wiggins releases.

Limited to 300, this one is a must buy. - dusted and seven, ten, twelve

"The Wiggins is Jon Read, a gritty one man garage-rock machine from space."

A stowaway orphan of an Apollo mission, Jon Read landed sometime ago in the lower half of the lower 48 in Space City, Houston. He’s played with all the requisite, gritty anti-popularity contests from that corner of outsider Americana (Daniel Johnston, Indian Jewelry, Quintron). He’s also played with the Black Lips, which on a track like “Dog”, might be the band he’s most easily aligned with sonically. Here are some good down home freak-outs fit for the rising star employees of the 13th Floor. - IMPOSE MAGAZINE

"cd review"

Part electro surf punk from outer space, part David Lynch outtake, and part home brewed garage opiate, I'm not exactly sure what The Wiggins are, but whatever it is, it's in' rad. Think the redefinition of lo-fi, Lou Reed in a garage disposal, Johnny Thunders'vampire alter-ego, leper underwear parties, and successful amateur noir snake charming. Rumor has it there's just one local Houstoner behind all this madness, which makes the effort even more impressive. This is the stuff of magic that gluttonous hipster vultures and college radio DJs will be getting all weak the knees about once Pitchfork clocks in a 8.372, so do yourself a favor and get it while it's fresh.
